Leading the pack: Spurs now favourites to land “exceptional” £60m Ramsey alternative – opinion
After an inconsistent Premier League season that secured them a spot in the Europa League, Tottenham Hotspur are gearing up for a busy summer transfer window.
The club is keen to bolster its squad and has been linked with several players in recent weeks. Among their top targets is Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze, a move that could significantly enhance their attacking options.
Initially, Spurs made a bid for Aston Villa’s Jacob Ramsey, offering £20 million plus Giovani Lo Celso. However, their bid was rejected.
Despite this setback, Tottenham remains undeterred and has now set their sights on a higher-profile target: Eberechi Eze of Crystal Palace.
According to a report from The Times, Tottenham is currently leading the race to sign Eze. The North London club is not put off by Eze’s £60 million release clause and is confident in securing the deal once Eze returns from the European Championships in Germany with the England squad.
The signing of Eze would mark a significant investment but one that Spurs believe will be worth every penny given his stellar performances last season.
Eze and Ramsey both played in similar roles last season, operating as attacking midfielders, left-wingers, and left midfielders. While Ramsey, at 23, is slightly younger than the 25-year-old Eze, the latter’s output and overall performance metrics set him apart.
In the 2022/23 season, Eze showcased his exceptional skills with 11 goals and 4 assists in 31 appearances, averaging a goal involvement every 1.82 games.
In stark contrast, Ramsey managed just one goal and two assists in 21 games for Aston Villa, averaging a goal involvement every seven matches.
When delving into their underlying performance metrics, Eze continues to outperform Ramsey. Eze excels in key areas such as non-penalty expected goals and assists, actual non-penalty goals and assists, progressive passes, shots on target, goals per shot, and shot-creating actions per 90 minutes. Additionally, Eze’s defensive contributions, such as ball recoveries and aerial duels, also surpass those of Ramsey.

Eze’s exceptional performance metrics highlight why Tottenham is willing to invest heavily in securing his services. While Ramsey is undoubtedly a talented player, Eze’s consistent ability to influence games and deliver results makes him a more valuable asset.
His versatility in attacking midfield and left-wing roles would provide Spurs with much-needed creativity and goal-scoring prowess.
Under the guidance of Ange Postecoglou, Tottenham aims to build a squad capable of competing at the highest level in both domestic and European competitions.
Eze’s signing would not only enhance their attacking options but also bring a level of flair and dynamism that could elevate the team’s overall performance.
His proven track record in the Premier League and his ability to perform on big stages make him an ideal fit for Spurs’ ambitious plans.
Tottenham Hotspur’s pursuit of Eberechi Eze reflects the club’s commitment to strengthening its squad with top-tier talent.
The potential acquisition of Eze would be a statement of intent, showcasing Tottenham’s ambition to compete at the highest level.
With Daniel Levy and Ange Postecoglou at the helm, Spurs are well-positioned to make impactful signings that could shape their competitive future.
As the summer transfer window progresses, securing Eze’s signature would be a significant coup for Tottenham, providing the team with a dynamic and creative force capable of making a substantial impact in the Premier League and beyond.
