Signed by Nuno: Spurs must now cash in on relentless ace who is worth more than VDV

Spurs must capitalize on the potential sale of Micky van de Ven, considering his current market value and the need to strengthen the squad further.

Tottenham’s resurgence this season under Ange Postecoglou has been fueled by astute signings, including James Maddison and Micky van de Ven.

However, injuries to key players like Van de Ven in November disrupted their momentum, emphasizing his importance to the team.

Van de Ven’s impact on the pitch is undeniable. Since his arrival from Wolfsburg for £43m last August, the dynamic Dutch defender has impressed with his athleticism, pace, and exceptional passing accuracy, boasting a 95% completion rate.

His defensive contributions, averaging 5.8 ball recoveries per game and a 60% duel success rate, further underline his value to the team.

With Van de Ven in the starting lineup, Tottenham’s defensive solidity significantly improves. Last season, they conceded 63 goals in the Premier League, highlighting the need for defensive reinforcement, which Van de Ven has provided admirably.

Although Cristian Romero is a quality defender, the absence of Van de Ven exposes Tottenham’s defensive vulnerabilities, especially with stand-ins like Emerson Royal struggling to meet the required standards.

Despite Emerson’s versatility and occasional flashes of brilliance, his inconsistency and defensive lapses make him expendable, especially considering his valuation by Football Transfers’ player valuation model (£23m).

Selling Emerson could fetch a substantial fee, which Daniel Levy should consider to reinvest in strengthening other areas of the squad.

Sky Sports pundit Paul Robinson advocates for cashing in on Emerson this summer if a suitable replacement is identified, given his limited playing time and defensive shortcomings.

While the Brazilian has shown glimpses of promise, his overall contribution has been below expectations, making him surplus to requirements in Postecoglou’s plans.

Despite Emerson’s contract running until 2026, his lack of regular starts and subpar performances indicate a lack of faith from the manager.

Signed for £26m from Barcelona in 2021 under Nuno Espirito Santo, Emerson has failed to justify his price tag and establish himself as a key player for Spurs.

Considering the positive trajectory Spurs are on under Postecoglou, offloading Emerson could facilitate further squad reshaping and reinforce the team’s ambitions for success in this new era.
