Mighty Spurs £105M double transfer deal now could take club to the next level
A look at the two important summer transfers that might propel Tottenham Hotspur to success next season.
Ange Postecoglou’s evident dissatisfaction as a promising season came to an end made it clearly plain that he felt the need for a few changes this summer, and he has allegedly requested the club to assist him in finding a centre-back, central midfielder, and striker for next season.
It’s clear that Tottenham Hotspur’s midfield was unable to provide the dynamism the Australian desired, and he lacked a number nine he trusted to put the ball in the goal. A centre-back is more likely to provide depth and competition for Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven than anything else, so making the appropriate signings higher up the pitch will most likely determine Spurs’ chances of finishing in the top four next season.
They’ve been connected with Conor Gallagher in midfield on several occasions, and it’s difficult to find a compelling reason to dismiss him. He has the traits Postecoglou seeks both on and off the ball: he is a smart passer who can run with the ball and move it forward fast, as well as a robust tackler who does not allow much go by him in defence.
Postecoglou requires a midfielder who can play in a high-intensity press and provide drive on the ball after turnovers. The Chelsea player, who is expected to be sold for around £50 million, has more turnovers per game than Rodrigo Bentancur, Pape Matar Sarr, and Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, while also generating more shooting opportunities.
Other reports have circulated, including Amadou Onana’s name, but the connection to Gallagher has persisted for a year, when Chelsea initially began negotiating with Mauricio Pochettino over whether to retain or sell him. With Pochettino gone, Gallagher is set to depart, and Spurs will almost certainly benefit.
That will assist Postecoglou, but no amount of increased energy in midfield will be effective until someone scores goals. Son Heung-Min has picked up most of the slack in Harry Kane’s absence, but Spurs seem to want him back on the left flank and a natural number nine to fill in the centre.
Santiago Giménez has been spotted at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium watching a game, but the club has been linked with a variety of strikers, with the only common thread being that they appear to be looking for a ‘genuine’ central striker, someone with the physicality and late movement to find space in the penalty area while not straying too far from it.
That fits Giménez, but the Feyenoord and Mexico attacker has been in poor form of late, and there is legitimate worry about how well he might do given his current goalscoring record. Consider pursuing Benjamin Šeško instead.
Several Premier League teams are interested in the young Slovenian attacker, who possesses many of Giménez’s traits – physical strength, finishing, and the ability to work space in the box – but is improving both in terms of his overall development at RB Leipzig and his goal scoring. Šeško concluded the season scoring in seven straight Bundesliga games.
That suggests he already has the goalscoring ability to be worth a punt, and while Leipzig aren’t keen to sell and hope to extend a contract with four years remaining, they are a selling club and could have their arm twisted – in any case, he has a release clause set at €65 million (£55.4 million), so the upper limit isn’t so unreasonable.
Giménez’s visit to Spurs suggests a desire for a player who can bully defenders and force their way into goalscoring positions, finishing off quick counter-attacks or direct passing plays. While an on-form version of the Mexico international offers this, Šeško appears to be the safer choice at the moment.
Spurs might go in any number of directions. This summer, top teams will be looking to trade their current strikers for newer models. Šeško has been linked with Chelsea, Arsenal, and Manchester United at various points, and has already reportedly rejected an approach from Saudi Arabia. It’s tough to predict whether the Slovenian will go to north London, but Spurs could use someone like him.
Postecoglou came close to bringing Champions League football back to Tottenham in the 2023/24 season, but fell just short; a few key signings might be all that’s required to push over the line next year. Gallagher and Šeško seem to be the ideal targets based on their previous search results.
