‘So unbalanced’: Frank Lampard slams £17M Tottenham player despite big win over Aston Villa

Tottenham secured a significant victory over Aston Villa, clinching three points with an impressive 4-1 comeback.

Despite trailing in the first half after Morgan Rogers put Villa ahead, Spurs responded with vigor in the second half, with Dominic Solanke scoring twice to lead the charge.

However, not everyone was fully convinced by Tottenham’s performance, with Frank Lampard pointing to a potential vulnerability in the lineup.

Lampard, commenting for Premier League Productions, expressed concerns over goalkeeper Vicario’s role in Villa’s opening goal.

He suggested Vicario appeared unbalanced and predicted opponents would continue to exploit this weakness. “The goalkeeper allowed himself to become unbalanced,” Lampard stated, adding that Tottenham’s set-piece vulnerability could be a recurring issue if not addressed.

Lampard’s assessment found support from former Premier League midfielder Matt Holland, who noted that Vicario lacked dominance on set pieces, particularly in his positioning and timing.

Holland explained that Vicario seemed distracted by Rogers on the line, leading to a straightforward tap-in for Villa. While Vicario did manage a decent save, Holland observed that his lack of assertiveness in the box left Spurs exposed.

Tottenham’s victory was still a strong one, and Vicario enjoyed a quiet second half, but his handling of set-pieces is an area needing improvement. At £17 million, Vicario has shown potential, yet teams with Champions League aspirations require a keeper who can consistently assert himself in critical moments.

As Lampard highlighted, opposing teams may increasingly look to target Vicario, who must work quickly to enhance his skills in these situations. Whether this calls for more support from his defenders or increased assertiveness from Vicario himself, it’s clear he has some adjustments to make to strengthen Tottenham’s defense.
