Sky Sports: Tottenham in “concrete talks” to sign £21m “monster” as Tel move falls through

Tottenham Hotspur have engaged in serious discussions regarding the potential signing of a highly rated attacking talent, with a deal expected to be worth over £20 million.

The club’s transfer activity has been a key focus, especially with the January window approaching its final hours. Despite securing a Europa League last-16 spot with a 3-0 victory over Elfsborg, where young talents Dane Scarlett, Damola Ajayi, and Mikey Moore found the net, Spurs remain keen on reinforcing their squad.

Manager Ange Postecoglou praised the academy’s role in the team’s success, highlighting the importance of developing young players who can make a difference on big occasions.

Postecoglou acknowledged the challenges posed by injuries and the need for reinforcements to maintain squad depth for the remainder of the season. So far, Tottenham have only brought in goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky, but speculation has surrounded a potential move for Bayern Munich striker Mathys Tel.

Reports indicated that a verbal agreement had been reached, with club chairman Daniel Levy even traveling to Germany for negotiations. However, Tel ultimately rejected the move, leaving Spurs searching for alternative options.

One such target is Stefanos Tzimas, a promising forward currently playing at 1. FC Nürnberg. Reports from Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg confirm that Tottenham have entered concrete discussions regarding a summer move for the Greek attacker.

The proposed deal would cost around €25 million (£21 million), with Premier League rivals Aston Villa also expressing interest. However, Brighton & Hove Albion currently lead the race for his signature. Tzimas remains under contract with PAOK but is on loan at Nürnberg, where the German side plan to activate an €18 million permanent transfer clause before potentially selling him at a profit.

The 2024/25 season has seen Tzimas deliver impressive performances, scoring 10 goals in 17 appearances across all competitions. His skill set has drawn comparisons to RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, with German football expert Tobias Kroger highlighting the striker’s all-around ability.

Kroger noted that Tzimas possesses an excellent aerial presence, surprising speed for his height, strong positional awareness, and clinical finishing in one-on-one situations.

His technical ability and link-up play add further value, making him a well-rounded forward capable of thriving in top European leagues.

With the transfer window nearing its close, Tottenham must act decisively to strengthen their squad. The failed pursuit of Tel has intensified the need for a new attacker, and Tzimas represents a potential long-term solution.

Whether Spurs manage to outmaneuver their competition and secure the signing remains to be seen, but the coming months could be crucial in shaping the club’s attacking options for the future.
