“Stepped up” under Ange Postecoglou, Paul Robinson says, so Emerson Royal wouldn’t be able to leave Tottenham during the January transfer window.
On January 21, The Sun said that Spurs had turned down a “shocking” £20 million deal from Al-Nassr, Cristiano Ronaldo’s agent.
Even though the club signed Radu Dragusin from Genoa this month, Robinson is sure that no one else will be interested in the 25-year-old because he has already proven his worth this season. However, he does say that the player could leave in the summer.
Based on Postecoglou’s instructions, Pedro Porro now starts on the right side of Tottenham’s defense. However, Brazilian Royal has spent most of his 18 games this season playing left back or center back because of injuries and suspensions.
Robinson, the former England goalkeeper, has been critical of Royal in the past, but that has convinced him that the player needs to be kept past the end of a tough transfer window.
“I don’t think they’ll let him go this month.” He told Tottenham News, “I don’t think they’ll let many go.”
“Of course Eric Dier has left, and Dragusin being there gives them the cover they needed. But Emerson Royal, listen, I’ve been critical of him in the past, and so have a lot of other people.”
“But this season, with Ange Postecoglou there, he’s really stepped up.”
“He’s been an important part of the team and doesn’t just play right back; he’s played anywhere in the back four and has even filled in at center back.”
“Yes, he could go if Ange changes up his pack again in the summer and tries to get stronger in certain areas to be more specific.”
Because Pedro Porro has been great at right back this season, Emerson Royal hasn’t played there as much, but he has at center back.
“If the manager wants to get better by adding a specific center-back or right-back cover, you can see why Emerson Royal might be moved out when the season is over.”
“But right now, in what has been a very, very tough transfer window, it will be hard to find a replacement for a player who has played so many games and in so many positions.”
“That means I don’t think he will get a deal in January at all.”
