Postecoglou responds on who will be Tottenham captain tomorrow
Tottenham Hotspur’s manager, Ange Postecoglou, addressed queries about the captaincy for Spurs’ FA Cup clash against Burnley scheduled for Friday night.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference held on Thursday afternoon ahead of the encounter at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Postecoglou provided insights on the captaincy situation within the squad.
The club’s permanent captain, Son Heung-min, is unavailable due to his departure for the Asian Cup, where he will represent South Korea. Furthermore, both vice-captains, Cristian Romero and James Maddison, remain sidelined due to injuries.
Consequently, Postecoglou faces the task of nominating a new figure to lead the team as they take on the Premier League strugglers in the FA Cup’s third round.
Responding to inquiries from the club’s media team – as shared on YouTube – regarding the captaincy decision for the upcoming fixture, Postecoglou indicated, “No, not really – the captain is Sonny. Sonny is the club captain and Madders and Romero. So whoever wears the armband tomorrow isn’t that important to me.”
Highlighting the significance of Sonny’s leadership qualities in actions and words, the manager stressed the necessity for other players to step up and fill the void left by Son Heung-min’s absence, emphasizing the need for collective effort regardless of the captaincy.
Speculation has arisen regarding potential candidates to take on the captain’s role for the Burnley encounter. The Athletic’s Jack Pitt-Brooke suggested Ben Davies as a viable stand-in, citing Davies’ previous armband experience during the Carabao Cup tie against Fulham in August.
Additionally, Pitt-Brooke raised the possibility of goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario being considered for the captaincy due to his demonstrated leadership qualities since joining Tottenham in the summer.
While there have been suggestions of leftfield options like Destiny Udogie or Dejan Kulusevski for the armband, Pitt-Brooke acknowledged that either choice would be considered “surprising.”
Postecoglou’s emphasis seems to underline that the captaincy holds less importance for the upcoming match, emphasizing instead the collective responsibility and team effort required on the night.
