Ruthless Postecoglou to axe Tottenham duo as ‘surplus to requirements’ verdict emerges

Among the Tottenham casualties this summer will be Djed Spence.

According to a source, Ange Postecoglou, manager of Tottenham Hotspur, is set to step up his squad clear-out this summer and will see Djed Spence and one of his team-mates depart North London.

Currently assessing the Tottenham team, Postecoglou aims to shed the dead wood and enhance specific areas. After they came fifth in the Premier League this season, this should let the team contend for Europa League glory next season and compete for a top-four berth.

Richarlison has been connected with a departure among Postecoglou’s hunt for a new striker, however news surfaced on Tuesday that the Brazilian is wanting to remain put.

Richarlison could stay at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but Englishman Spence is set to leave on after Postecoglou declared him “surplus to requirements”.

Pete O’Rourke, a writer for Tottenham, said Spence appears likely to join a different club permanently this summer and is well down the pecking order.

Originally leased out to Leeds United, the right-back failed to have an effect and was loaned out to Genoa in January.

Ad Spence’s fortunes grew in Italy, and it was said on April that Genoa intended to sign him permanently—which would delight Postecoglou.

Genoa will therefore want to lower the price, even if they do not wish to pay the whole amount required to activate their option to acquire (€10 million/£8.5 m).

Spurs initially paid Middlesbrough £20m to acquire Spence in July 2022, hence it seems they would suffer financially when letting him go.

The relocation seemed doomed to fail right from the start as then Spurs manager Antonio Conte declined to play the 23-year-old since it was a signing for the team, not him.

O’Rourke also notes that Bryan Gil, a winger, will follow Spence out of Spurs’ exit door. Gil has visited Postecoglou a few times, but he has not done enough to earn a starting position and will be allowed to depart so Spurs may recover some transfer money.

Regularly speculated to join one of his previous teams in La Liga, either Sevilla or Valencia, is the four-cap Spain international.

On May 3 Sevilla claimed to be leading Gil’s race and ready to discuss a possible purchase with Spurs.

Sevilla would rather, however, sign Gil on loan with an obligation to purchase rather than closing a permanent agreement right away.

Originally paying Sevilla £21.6m for Gil, Spurs also sent Erik Lamela in the other way. But the wide player has never lived up to expectations in England, hence Spurs will suffer losses upon eventual sale.

Other players expected to depart Spurs in the near future are Spence and Gil; Postecoglou has not been thrilled with Emerson Royal either. Now in negotiations for a move to AC Milan is the full-back.

Those three exits will provide room on the pay sheet for Postecoglou to bring in some of his own objectives. RB Leipzig striker Lois Openda, who has scored 28 goals in 45 appearances this season, is very dear to him.

Postecoglou also thinks Ederson, the star of Atalanta, would greatly enhance his midfield choices. Still, the 24-year-old Brazilian interests Liverpool and Manchester United as well.
