Postecoglou rages at Tottenham stars and accuses Ipswich players of dirty tactics

Ange Postecoglou delivered a scathing critique of his players and suggested Ipswich took “strategic time-outs” to disrupt Tottenham’s momentum in their surprising Premier League defeat.

Ipswich secured their first league victory of the season with goals from Sam Szmodics and Liam Delap, marking a memorable performance against a Tottenham side struggling to find consistency.

Szmodics opened the scoring with an impressive overhead kick, capitalizing on a moment of defensive disarray after Jens Cajuste’s cross into the box. Delap then added to the tally before halftime, seizing another lapse in Tottenham’s defense to slot the ball in from close range.

Rodrigo Bentancur’s second-half goal gave Tottenham a glimmer of hope, but Ipswich held firm to secure all three points in a hard-fought win.

After the match, Postecoglou didn’t hold back in his criticism of Tottenham’s lackluster performance, expressing his disappointment in the sluggish and passive start his players made.

He emphasized the importance of taking ownership, acknowledging that he is ultimately responsible for getting consistent performances from the squad.

In his words, “It’s hugely disappointing. We started slow and passively, giving ourselves a mountain to climb. We had chances in the second half but didn’t do enough to win the game. I’m the person in charge, so that’s usually the way it goes. I take responsibility. We can’t give ourselves those kinds of mountains to climb.”

Adding to his remarks, Postecoglou alluded to a tactic he felt Ipswich used to their advantage, suggesting that players went down with apparent injuries to interrupt Tottenham’s flow and ease the pressure.

He remarked, “It seems to be the way the Premier League is going. Clubs are taking strategic time-outs. We just have to cop it. It’s up to the officials, not me.”

Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna, on the other hand, was elated with his team’s performance, as they celebrated their first Premier League win since 2002.

Facing one of the league’s stronger sides, Ipswich was able to hold their own and execute a balanced approach, showing resilience and adaptability throughout the match.

McKenna reflected on the journey leading up to this victory, noting the significance of the moment for his players and the club. “The journey to get to here has been a big one. It feels a bit special today. We believe we’ve been improving. We’ve picked up five out of 10 results, but we were waiting for the first win to validate the work and improvements,” he shared.

He continued, praising his team’s performance against Tottenham. “The first half was everything you would want for a team in our context against Tottenham. We found a good balance, moving between playing at a good tempo and slowing the game down. In the second half, we showed resilience, defended well, and remained a threat on the break. It was a top performance.”

Tottenham’s challenge now is to address the inconsistencies that led to this defeat. While Ipswich’s victory was unexpected, they earned it with disciplined tactics, a solid defensive stance, and well-timed attacks that capitalized on Tottenham’s mistakes.

For Postecoglou and his squad, this loss highlighted areas in need of improvement if they hope to maintain momentum through the rest of the season and compete at the top level.

Meanwhile, Ipswich’s first league win is a landmark achievement and a potential turning point in their Premier League campaign, offering confidence and motivation as they navigate upcoming fixtures.
