Postecoglou makes Heung-min Son admission ahead of Spurs vs Ipswich

Ange Postecoglou has hinted at a cautious approach for managing Heung-min Son’s playing time as Spurs prepare to face Ipswich Town on Saturday.

Known for his consistency and resilience, Son has rarely dealt with injuries during his nine-and-a-half-year tenure at Tottenham.

However, this season has seen the forward experience both hamstring and thigh issues early on, prompting Postecoglou to adjust his strategy for the veteran player.

During Tottenham’s recent 4-1 victory over Aston Villa, Postecoglou made the decision to substitute Son in the 55th minute, prioritizing his long-term health despite the player’s visible frustration with the early exit.

Although the move surprised some, it aligns with Postecoglou’s intention to minimize the risk of aggravating Son’s existing injuries, especially given the current roster constraints.

In the recent Europa League clash with Galatasaray, Postecoglou opted to start Son again, largely due to limited options with Wilson Odobert, Richarlison, Timo Werner, and Mikey Moore all sidelined.

With these players still unavailable, the head coach faces limited choices in attack, making it likely that Son and Brennan Johnson will once again lead the front line against Ipswich.

Postecoglou addressed his approach toward managing Son’s playing time, expressing a desire to prevent another injury setback. He explained, “For Sonny, he obviously had the injury and we brought him back, and he had a relapse.

We don’t want to put him in that position. We’re building him up, managing his minutes, and hopefully, we can increase that gradually. With Wilson, Richy, and Mikey out, we can’t afford to lose another player.”

With a depleted bench, Postecoglou is navigating an attack without many backup options and hopes his side can secure a strong lead within the first hour against Ipswich. If successful, it would allow him to rest key players like Son and Pedro Porro, who are set to play significant minutes during the upcoming international break.
