Postecoglou explains Heung-min Son decision after Tottenham star pictured in ‘shock’
Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou addressed his decision to substitute Heung-min Son early in the second half against Aston Villa, explaining that Son’s recent injury history made the change inevitable.
Postecoglou had always intended to limit Son’s playtime, removing him after 55 minutes to avoid risking further injury—a prudent choice given Son’s prior setback after surpassing the 60-minute mark in a recent match.
Son’s competitive nature likely made it frustrating to leave the pitch with the game tied 1-1, yet Postecoglou’s strategy proved effective as Tottenham went on to secure a decisive 4-1 victory.
This early exit not only allowed Son crucial recovery time but also demonstrated Tottenham’s depth in attack.
With an upcoming Europa League clash against Galatasaray, Postecoglou aims to ensure a fully fit squad. In light of Son’s recent fitness struggles, the manager’s cautious approach seemed essential.
Although a defeat to Villa could have raised doubts about the decision, Tottenham showed resilience, thanks in part to contributions from players like Dominic Solanke and substitute James Maddison, who helped secure the win.
Tottenham’s abundant attacking options made preserving Son’s fitness a practical move. Richarlison replaced Son, later providing an assist for Solanke before leaving the pitch due to injury.
Maddison then stepped up to deliver a free-kick goal in the closing moments. Though Postecoglou could have turned to Mikey Moore or Timo Werner if needed, the existing lineup maintained control, sealing a comfortable victory.
