Postecoglou backs tired Spurs after Brighton defeat

Ange Postecoglou blamed tiredness and injury after Brighton’s fifth Premier League loss of the year at the Amex Stadium handed a serious blow to Tottenham’s hopes of finishing in the top four.

Actually, a fatigued Spurs team, whose goals came late in the game when their rivals had already secured the victory, was flattered by the 4-2 scoreline.

After only 11 minutes, Jack Hinshelwood gave the home team the lead with a 10-yard bomb. Although the finish was flawless, Joao Pedro deserves recognition for tiptoeing past three Spurs defenders to set up the 18-year-old.

And as Danny Welbeck wound up to shoot, Dejan Kulusevski grabbed a fistful of his shirt, and the Brazilian doubled the Seagulls’ advantage from the spot. Referee Jarred Gillett complied with VAR’s request to review his decision to give the penalty even though he was not inclined to do so in real time.

Albion announced an open season on the Spurs defense, making a third look imminent. Pedro, who had pounced on a botched backpass from Pedro Porro, was denied by Guglielmo Vicario with a superb save, while Facundo Buonanotte had a goal disallowed for offside. Richarlison was not at his best; two strikes were disallowed for offside, and the Brazilian could only watch as Pervis Estupinan scored a spectacular goal from 25 yards out.

Pedro’s tenth penalty of the season, which sent Vicario the wrong way, compounded the humiliation of the visitors, just as it had done an hour earlier. On this occasion, Giovani Lo Celso, the replacement, was found to have unlawfully knocked down Evan Ferguson.

However, there was a kind of riposte, albeit fleeting. Alejo Veliz and Ben Davies’ late goals gave the visiting supporters cause for celebration, but Brighton earned the three points as a result of their outstanding play.

Regarding the performance

For a large portion of the evening, Postecoglou stood incredulously on the touchline, watching his team struggle to find the form that had propelled them to three straight victories. The Australian, who called Spurs’ performance in Sussex “leggy” but praised their effort, feels that the team’s recent efforts have come at a charge.

“We probably looked a little bit tired,” he continued, addressing Amazon at full time. After all they’ve been through over the last two weeks, you have be fair to the boys. Brighton, who are usually a good team, were excellent, and we seemed a little lanky. I can’t condemn our perseverance since we held on until the very end.

While the squad still demonstrates its spirit, we lacked vigor tonight. You could tell, and it will cost you against Brighton. In the end, there was a mountain to climb. The guys gave it their best throughout the game, and that’s all I could ask for, in our opinion, so that’s a positive.

Regarding late comeback

When Pedro scored Brighton’s fourth goal, a large number of Spurs supporters decided they had had enough and headed for the exits. For those who stuck around, the visitors pulled two goals back in a thrilling comeback.

During his news conference after the game, Postecoglou said of the late comeback, “Right to the end they were pushing.” They deserve praise for using every resource at their disposal to strive to get anything from the game. The players’ unwavering efforts have put us in that position just as much as our football.”

When Son Heung-min crossed the ball, young Veliz scored his maiden goal for the Lilywhites, scuffing the effort into the bottom corner. Veliz was obviously happy with the result. With tempered appreciation, his manager said, “It’s always good to get a goal, I guess.” Getting it on the winning side is preferable than the losing side. It’s good that he was included in the score.

Regarding the injury problem at Spurs

When asked whether the demanding holiday schedule was the reason of his charges’ exhaustion, Postecoglou said, “No, it’s because we have 10 players injured.” The players have given it their best every game, and it’s a testament to them that we are where we are, so feel free to visit the well as often as you want. That’s all I can ask for.

In addition to Yves Bissouma, who added his name to the lengthy list of injured players due to his second red card of the season, Tottenham’s vice captains James Maddison and Cristian Romero were not present for the team’s loss on Thursday.

It’s challenging. Postecoglou said, “This entire run has been challenging. We’ve merely attempted to continue playing despite being stretched for a very long period. That is what we have done, and the players’ tremendous efforts to do tasks that are often outside of their brief—yet which they undertake voluntarily and with all of their hearts—have only put us in this situation.

That’s all I can ask for, in my opinion. It’s impressive that the guys gave it all they had. Although we didn’t try our hardest, we didn’t succeed today.
