Former Premier League player claims Postecoglou signing is holding Tottenham back

Tottenham’s goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario has come under criticism for his vulnerabilities during set pieces.

Last summer, Tottenham sought a new shot-stopper and secured Vicario’s signature from FC Empoli for £17 million.

Since joining the club, the 27-year-old has been the preferred choice in goal. While he has shown excellence with the ball at his feet and has demonstrated solid shot-stopping abilities, his struggles with set pieces have drawn scrutiny.

Former West Ham United goalkeeper Shaka Hislop voiced criticism of Vicario’s performance against his former club while speaking on ESPN.

Hislop expressed concerns that the Italian goalkeeper lacked the physical presence to assert himself and deal effectively with set pieces.

During the match against West Ham, Tottenham defenders were pinned down by West Ham players during a set piece, and Vicario failed to assert himself and claim the ball by rushing out.

Hislop remarked on ESPN: “He simply isn’t strong enough to bump players out of the way.

West Ham aren’t going to move anybody – they are staying in the six-yard box, challenging Vicario. Spurs are on a hiding to nothing, with Vicario.”

Despite taking the lead against West Ham through a Brennan Johnson goal, Tottenham conceded from a corner shortly after.

A victory would have drawn them level on points with fourth-placed Aston Villa. However, they were unable to secure the desired result.
