£65M player is stalling on signing a new contract after links with Tottenham, club are getting nervous now
Given their solid financial situation, it wouldn’t be shocking if Tottenham Hotspur targeted some extremely ambitious players this summer.
In his first season as manager, Ange Postecoglou has already given Spurs supporters more than enough reasons to be optimistic about his abilities.
Daniel Levy is eager to support his new guy, even if he will use prudence when necessary.
The additions of Radu Dragusin and Lucas Bergvall demonstrated how desirable Spurs’ vision has become, as they outperformed offers from Bayern Munich and Barcelona, respectively.
It’s obvious that Postecoglou is doing something unique at Tottenham.
Having said that, Spurs will need to recruit a star or two this summer in addition to strengthening their roster.
The player from Barcelona who most certainly qualifies as a “star” is Frenkie de Jong.
Furthermore, Tottenham may have received some encouragement given their recent interest in him in light of some reports surrounding his contract status in Spain.
Barcelona is now reportedly becoming “a little nervous” that De Jong hasn’t publicly responded to the team’s new contract offer, according to a report by The Athletic.
The La Liga team is eager to reach an agreement on a new contract since De Jong’s current one expires in the summer of 2026, according to the report.
De Jong hasn’t responded or accepted an offer that was made to him on the same conditions, however.
Barcelona has thus made it quite plain that, should De Jong decline the deal, the team would prefer to sell in an effort to recuperate the £65 million that was spent to bring the Dutchman to the club.
Naturally, considering the elite talent of the Tottenham target, Daniel Levy is undoubtedly going to be closely monitoring this scenario in the lead-up to the summer.
Although Spurs’ level of interest in him is still unknown, he is undoubtedly a player who has the ability to completely change Postecoglou’s midfield.
Few players in global football are more progressive than De Jong when given the appropriate job, despite the fact that he hasn’t exactly lived up to his full potential at Barcelona.
