Maddison reacts to news coming out of Tottenham earlier

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Maddison has extended his best wishes to Eric Dier following the confirmation of the defender’s loan move away from Spurs.

Thursday marked a busy day for Tottenham in the transfer arena, welcoming Radu Dragusin to N17 while facilitating loan departures for Dier and Djed Spence.

Dier secured a loan switch to Bayern Munich until the season’s end, with an option for the move to become permanent for an additional year, as reported by BBC Sport.

ESPN notes that Bayern will pay a fee ranging from €2 million to €4 million, contingent on Dier’s performances, for the permanent deal.

As Dier’s contract with Tottenham expires at the end of the season, it appears likely that the 29-year-old has concluded his tenure with the club.

In response to Tottenham confirming Dier’s departure, Maddison took to Instagram stories to convey a message to his fellow Three Lions teammate, stating, “Good luck brother! Great player & great human. Will be missed.”

Dier has faced a lack of opportunities under Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou, making only four Premier League appearances this season, despite the team grappling with a defensive personnel crisis. With Dragusin’s arrival, Dier would have seen himself further down the pecking order.

While the move aligns with the interests of all parties, it evokes a sense of sadness to witness a player like Dier, who dedicated a significant portion of his career to Tottenham and contributed to one of their strongest squads, part ways.

Dier played a crucial role under Mauricio Pochettino during the team’s consistent challenges for the Premier League title in the 2010s, including reaching the Champions League final in 2019.

Acquired from Sporting Lisbon in 2014 for a reported £4 million, the 29-year-old has amassed 364 competitive appearances for the Lilywhites.
