‘Not my destiny’ – Premier League star sheds light on his failed Tottenham move

Before he joined Manchester United, Bruno Fernandes acknowledged that he was almost a Tottenham Hotspur player and that he was let down when the North London team was unable to negotiate a contract with Sporting Lisbon at the time.

Since Fernandes was named club captain last year and has made 159 appearances for the team, many now refer to him as Mr. Man Utd.

The 29-year-old almost joined Spurs before joining United, however, as the North London club made a bid for him in the summer of 2019, which happened to be Mauricio Pochettino’s penultimate transfer window at the club.

Speaking about his abortive transfer to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Fernandes said in The Players’ Tribune, “The only thing that was definite was Tottenham. Though now I find it strange, I was thrilled at the moment. My dream job would be to play in the Premier League.

Although I made an effort to tune out all the noise, my friends naturally informed me about the rumours in this day and age of social media, phones, and text.

Though I was incredibly thrilled at Sporting, it was a complex feeling. It was a wonderful environment for me, and I could feel the love from the supporters. Still, that was not my fate.

In Our View

The deal falling through was undoubtedly advantageous to Spurs and Fernandes. Though the former Sporting player would have fit in Postecoglou’s starting eleven, I doubt Mourinho or Conte would have taken a fancy to him since none of them plays with a typical number 10.
