Key Tottenham man leaves pitch in tears after picking up injury
Rodrigo Bentancur came off with an injury in Uruguay’s semi-final clash against Colombia yesterday, with El Observador revealing that the Tottenham man was in tears when he walked off the pitch.
Bentancur’s withdrawal was a concern
Bentancur missed almost the entirety of 2023 due to an ACL injury, which was followed up by another ankle injury, with the midfielder struggling to get back to his best on his return.
The 27-year-old has shown some promising signs in the Copa America and Spurs fans would have been hoping that he was able to get back to his pre-injury form at the start of the new campaign.
However, the former Juventus man has now suffered another potential injury setback, being forced off the pitch for Uruguay in their semi-final clash at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Bentancur started the game and lasted 32 minutes before asking to be taken off as Colombia emerged 1-0 winners to book their place in the final.
The midfielder has had an unlucky time with injuries
Uruguayan media outlet El Observador wrote about the midfielder: “After 25 minutes he started running with difficulty. After 32 minutes he asked for the change, because it was noticeable that he couldn’t take it anymore.
“He left crying from the court after 33 minutes and his injury disorganised the team that minutes later suffered 1-0.”
Uruguay’s defeat meant they missed the opportunity for Bentancur to square off against his Tottenham team-mates Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso in the final if he had come through the fixture unscathed.
