James Maddison spotted as three return to Tottenham training but four missing

The sun was shining brightly over Hotspur Way on Tuesday morning, providing a hopeful backdrop for a Tottenham Hotspur side facing a massive week of football.

As the players filed out onto the pristine training pitches in Enfield, there was a noticeable sense of focus mixed with a bit of much-needed relief.

The North London club is currently preparing for a high-stakes Champions League Round of 16 second-leg clash against Atletico Madrid, and the atmosphere at the training ground suggested a group of players ready to fight for their lives on the pitch.

Things have not been easy for Spurs lately. They are heading into the match against the Spanish giants with a significant mountain to climb, carrying a 5-2 deficit from the first leg in Madrid.

To make matters even more stressful, the team is also embroiled in a fierce battle at the bottom of the Premier League table.

With a massive game against Nottingham Forest coming up this Sunday—a match that could go a long way in deciding who stays in the top flight and who faces the drop—interim head coach Igor Tudor has his hands full balancing European ambitions with domestic survival.

However, the mood has been lifted slightly following a gritty performance at Anfield over the weekend. By securing a hard-fought draw against Liverpool, Tottenham finally put an end to a miserable six-game losing streak, proving they still have the stomach for a fight.

One of the biggest talking points from Tuesday’s session was the return of several key figures to the grass. Perhaps the most important boost for the defense was the sight of club captain Cristian Romero participating in the session.

Romero had been sidelined due to concussion protocols following a nasty clash of heads during the first leg in Spain. Having the Argentine leader back in the fold is a massive psychological and tactical win for Tudor, especially when trying to overturn a three-goal deficit.

Joining Romero on the pitches were Destiny Udogie and Lucas Bergvall. Udogie has been recovering from a nagging hamstring injury, and while Tudor hinted last week that he was getting close, seeing him back with the main group confirms he is ready to contribute again. Bergvall’s return was perhaps even more surprising and welcome.

The young midfielder has been out since January following surgery on his left ankle, and his swift recovery is a testament to his hard work behind the scenes.

Additionally, Micky van de Ven was back in high spirits; although he wasn’t injured, he missed the Liverpool game due to suspension and is now eligible to bolster the backline against Atletico.

While the return of those three players sparked joy, there were still some notable absences that will worry the fans.

Richarlison was not seen on the outdoor pitches, though it is understood he was working individually in the gym. Since he is suspended for the upcoming Champions League match due to an accumulation of yellow cards, his absence from the tactical drills on the grass wasn’t entirely unexpected.

More concerning was the sight of Joao Palhinha working alone. He was spotted jogging around a separate pitch with a member of the sports science team, which usually indicates a player is still in the final stages of the concussion protocol and not yet cleared for full-contact training.

Furthermore, the squad is still dealing with some illness and minor knocks. Conor Gallagher, who traveled to Liverpool but was forced to watch from the sidelines due to a sudden bout of sickness, was still missing on Tuesday.

Similarly, Yves Bissouma remained out of action as he continues to recover from a muscle injury. These absences leave the midfield looking a little thin just when Tudor needs every available body for the rotation.

One of the most emotional moments of the morning came when James Maddison was spotted. The 29-year-old midfielder has been a massive miss for Spurs ever since he suffered a devastating ACL injury last summer.

While the rest of the squad gathered for their tactical drills, Maddison emerged early to head to a far pitch on the edge of the training complex. He spent his session working on his rehabilitation under the warm sun.

While it’s heartening to see him back on the grass, the club is being extremely cautious. Given how long it took players like Radu Dragusin to return to competitive action after returning to training in the past, it remains a long shot that we will see Maddison in a Spurs shirt before the current season concludes.

The priority is clearly his long-term health rather than a rushed comeback.

Despite the injuries and the pressure of the relegation scrap, the energy during the session was surprisingly positive. Winning a point at Liverpool seems to have broken the dark cloud that was hanging over the club.

During the early warm-up drills, the sound of laughter echoed across the training ground. In one particular reaction drill, where players had to sprint in directions dictated by the coaches, there was plenty of teasing.

Pape Matar Sarr and Kevin Danso showed off their sharp reflexes, while the lightning-fast Micky van de Ven and Djed Spence drew roars of laughter from their teammates after they guessed the wrong way and sprinted in the opposite direction.

The lighthearted mood continued when Mathys Tel provided the comedy highlight of the morning. As the group began a light jog to start the session, the young Frenchman accidentally tripped over a stray ball and tumbled onto the grass. Rather than being embarrassed, Tel laughed along with his teammates as they jokingly poked fun at his lack of coordination.

It was a small moment, but it highlighted a squad that is finally starting to bond again after a very difficult winter.

As the session wound down and the media were ushered away, the focus shifted back to the tactical plan for Atletico Madrid.

Tottenham knows they need a minor miracle to progress in the Champions League, but with key defenders returning and a renewed sense of belief, they are at least heading into the fight with a smile on their faces.

The fans will be hoping that the joy seen on the training pitch on Tuesday translates into goals and a solid defense on Wednesday night.
