‘It’s impossible’: Fabrizio Romano says £15m player definitely won’t be at Tottenham next season

Tottenham Hotspur face crucial decisions in the coming months as they navigate what has been a disappointing season.

Struggling in the bottom half of the Premier League table and already eliminated from both domestic cup competitions, the club finds itself in a position where changes are inevitable.

Several players have failed to meet expectations, and a summer overhaul appears likely. Among those under scrutiny is Timo Werner, whose future at the club seems all but decided.

The German forward, who joined Spurs on loan, has faced heavy criticism for his performances. Speaking on Market Madness, journalist Fabrizio Romano provided insight into Werner’s situation, stating that Tottenham have already decided against triggering their option to buy him at the end of the season. The £15 million clause in his loan deal will not be exercised, making his stay in North London temporary.

When asked about Werner’s future and a possible move to MLS, particularly with New York Red Bulls, Romano dismissed any likelihood of Tottenham securing him permanently.

He described the situation as more than just unlikely, calling it “impossible” based on information from within the club. Tottenham’s management has internally concluded that Werner has not performed at the level required to warrant a permanent deal. His loan spell has not been beneficial for either party, and both sides seem prepared to move on.

The expectation is that Werner will return to RB Leipzig, his parent club, before exploring other opportunities. While links to MLS emerged in January, Romano noted that there was no concrete interest from New York Red Bulls at that time.

Whether the situation changes in the summer remains to be seen, but for now, the priority appears to be finding a new challenge elsewhere.

Werner’s time at Tottenham has been underwhelming, with his impact in front of goal falling short of expectations. His contributions in attack have been minimal, and he has struggled to make a meaningful difference in crucial matches.

The decision not to retain him reflects the club’s need for more reliable attacking options as they look to rebuild ahead of the next campaign.

Despite arriving with experience from top European leagues, Werner has failed to make an impact, and his departure will allow Tottenham to reassess their attacking options.

With changes expected in the squad, the club will likely focus on securing players who can contribute more effectively to their ambitions. As Werner’s time in North London comes to an end, attention will shift to potential replacements who can provide the attacking spark Tottenham have lacked this season.
