‘I was pushed aside’: Postecoglou directly told one player he’ll never play for Tottenham again, so he left

An ex-Spurs player has spoken about the meeting with Ange Postecoglou that ended his time with the club.

In the summer of 2023, the North Londoners brought in the Australian as their new manager, prompting a few adjustments.

Since taking over, Postecoglou has done wonders for the team, and every player move he made has paid off.

Now we know how one player’s August 2023 meeting with Tottenham manager Ange Postoglou went.

Following his discussions with Ange Postecoglou, Hugo Lloris claims he was “pushed aside” by Tottenham.

After playing for Lyon in France, Hugo Lloris transferred to Tottenham in the summer of 2012.

During his stint with Spurs, the custodian made 447 appearances and was widely considered a top performer. For the club, he created some unforgettable memories.

Everyone within Tottenham had the utmost regard for Lloris, and he was captain for a long, long time as well.

But it was obvious that something had to change before the season’s conclusion in 2022–23. Then, Lloris was supposed to depart from the club.

The veteran has said that he, too, knew his time had come at that moment, but that a discussion with Postecoglou was the last straw that led to his departure from Tottenham.

Upon taking over as Spurs manager, the new man had his own vision for the team, and one of his goals was to replace Lloris with a younger, more technically gifted custodian.

After joining Tottenham from Empoli, Guglielmo Vicario immediately established himself as the team’s starting custodian. Deputy to him was appointed Fraser Forster.

Lloris then says that he and Postecoglou had a conversation in which Postecoglou told him he would “no longer enter the field.” Claiming to be only a “training player,” the Frenchman was “pushed aside” after hearing this news.

“Tottenham were coming to the end of a cycle, and so was I,” Mourinho told Le Parisien. Given my position, I was aware that Tottenham preferred to sign younger players.

I was no longer involved in the arrangements as summer approached.

The coach told me I would no longer participate in the tournament once it began in August 2023; instead, I would serve as a training player. I was ignored; I had gone from opaque to visible.

The way Lloris acted after his dismissal
Hearing that you are unwelcome is never unpleasant, but it becomes much more so when you have been a major player for the club for more than ten years.

Lloris, who was clearly fuming at that moment, must have found it really difficult.

Nonetheless, the World Cup champion is a true professional; he helped out the other goalkeepers on the team even after being informed he would never play for the club again.

Prior to Lloris’s January 2024 departure from Tottenham, Postecoglou boasted about how professional Lloris was and that he couldn’t speak highly enough of him. Up to the very end, their relationship was cordial.

A source close to the Spurs manager told beIN Sports that he has only been in his role for a few months, but that Hugo has been outstanding the whole time.

His career and impact on this football club have been nothing short of remarkable. He has been captain for a long time and has always played a highly professional game, especially when he is collaborating with goalkeepers Rob Burchy and the others.

With Vicario taking over as custodian, he has been a great asset to the team, therefore I can’t say anything bad about him and probably won’t.

“He has always maintained an extremely professional demeanour.”
