“I am told” – Journalist says Tottenham have now been offered club captain on loan in January

Tottenham Hotspur could be handed an unexpected opportunity in the January transfer window as Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen has reportedly been given the green light to leave the Spanish giants.

According to reports, Spurs have been approached with an offer to take the German shot-stopper on an initial loan deal a move that has certainly raised eyebrows among supporters.

The North London club has recently come under scrutiny for their lack of creativity and consistency, with critics suggesting that the current squad still lacks balance and direction.

Following a disappointing 0-0 draw away at Monaco in the Champions League, Tottenham’s struggles in attack were once again laid bare. The result came just days after a 2-1 home defeat to Aston Villa, leaving fans frustrated at the team’s inability to impose themselves in games or convert possession into meaningful chances.

Despite boasting some impressive individual performances, particularly from Joao Palhinha and Rodrigo Bentancur in midfield, there remain concerns over the team’s cohesion.

Tottenham’s transition from defence to attack often looks disjointed, and that was painfully clear against Monaco. While goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario was the standout performer on the night, making a series of outstanding saves including three key stops from Folarin Balogun in the first half the team’s attacking output remained flat.

The match statistics told the story perfectly. Monaco registered 21 shots compared to Tottenham’s 10, with nine on target to Spurs’ four. Possession was evenly split at 50%, but it was the French side who looked more threatening throughout.

Tottenham’s inability to control games or create consistent chances has prompted growing calls for change, especially in the forward areas.

There were, however, some bright moments. Young winger Wilson Odobert impressed many with what was described as his best performance in a Spurs shirt before being forced off with an injury midway through the second half.

His absence was felt as Tottenham struggled to find any rhythm in attack after his substitution.

While Vicario has faced occasional criticism this season for his handling of crosses, his performance in Monaco reminded everyone why he has quickly become a fan favourite.

The Italian keeper’s reflexes and command of his area earned Spurs a valuable point, and many believe his position should be one of the least of Tottenham’s worries heading into January.

However, journalist Graeme Bailey has revealed that Tottenham have been approached regarding the potential loan signing of Marc-André ter Stegen.

Speaking to TBR Football, Bailey claimed that Barcelona have informed the 33-year-old that he is free to leave in the winter transfer window.

The German international, who has been with Barça since 2014, has found himself on the fringes of the first team following a series of injuries that limited him to just nine appearances since last season.

Ter Stegen, still the club captain despite his recent absence, has seen his place taken by summer signing Joan Garcia. With Barcelona now ready to move on, intermediaries have reportedly contacted several Premier League clubs including Tottenham, Manchester United, Newcastle United, and West Ham to gauge interest in a possible loan deal.

Bailey stated: “Ter Stegen is expected to be fully fit by December. He knows there’s no longer a place for him at Barcelona, and intermediaries have been given the green light to explore options across Europe. The Premier League is a destination he would seriously consider, and Barcelona see a loan move as a stepping stone toward a permanent transfer.”

Ter Stegen’s pedigree is unquestionable. A six-time La Liga champion and Champions League winner, he has been one of Europe’s top goalkeepers for nearly a decade.

His experience, leadership, and composure would bring undeniable quality to any dressing room. Yet, the potential deal comes with complications.

The German’s recent injury record raises concerns, and his reported £280,000-per-week wages would make him one of Tottenham’s highest earners a significant financial gamble for a player whose fitness remains uncertain.

While adding a world-class name like ter Stegen may sound appealing, it’s hard to argue that goalkeeper is Tottenham’s priority position right now.

Vicario’s consistent performances have earned widespread praise, and the team’s real issues lie further up the pitch. The lack of cutting edge in attack and creativity in the final third have been recurring problems this season, and those areas arguably need more urgent attention.

There have already been whispers of Tottenham pursuing attacking reinforcements. Dominic Solanke’s fitness struggles and Richarlison’s inconsistent form have reportedly led the club to explore striker options for 2026, with Ivan Toney emerging as a possible target.

Additionally, after missing out on Savinho in the summer, sporting directors Fabio Paratici and Johan Lange could look to strengthen the wings when the winter market opens.

Tottenham’s project under Thomas Frank still feels like a work in progress. While the foundations are there, the team lacks the flair and finishing quality needed to challenge at the very top. The idea of adding a player of ter Stegen’s calibre would certainly generate headlines, but unless his arrival comes alongside attacking reinforcements, Spurs may find themselves addressing the wrong problem once again.
