Gary Lineker sympathises with Ange Postecoglou in chat about Spurs owners ‘whinging’

Gary Lineker has lifted the lid on former Tottenham managers’ “gripes” with the club’s hierarchy. Following Spurs chief Ange Postecoglou’s outburst about the club’s “fragile” underpinnings, Lineker pointed out that this sentiment has been shared by some of his predecessors.

The Australian manager was left stunned by the number of fans who were rooting for a loss against Manchester City to thwart bitter rivals Arsenal‘s title hopes. Postecoglou didn’t mince his words, stating: “I think the last 48 hours has revealed to me that the foundations are fairly fragile. That’s just what I think.”

He continued: “I just think the last 48 hours have revealed a fair bit to me. That’s alright. It just means I’ve got to go back to the drawing board with some things.”

The issue of discontent behind the scenes at Spurs, who haven’t won a major trophy since 2008, is nothing new. Lineker, the ex-Tottenham forward, discussed Postecoglou’s grievances on the Rest Is Football podcast alongside Alan Shearer and Micah Richards, highlighting a pattern of “interfering” and “whinging” from the ownership (via Football London).

Lineker pointed out: “He won’t be the first to have frustration at the Tottenham ownership,” recalling past comments from Jose Mourinho who once remarked: “I have really good contacts with my former clubs, except Tottenham.”

The Match of the Day host added: “Antonio Conte said pretty much the same thing, attacking the owners. I’ve spoken to one or two [former] managers there and they [the owners] can be a little bit interfering, let’s say, or can whinge a little bit about team selection from the upper echelons.

Adding all those things together, I think there’s a little bit of a gripe about the leadership at Tottenham, way above [the playing side].”
