‘Not football’: Jose Mourinho & Gareth Bale drop truth bombs about Tottenham during UCL final
When Jose Mourinho was the manager of Tottenham Hotspur, the supporters would never understand why their team failed to win a single game.
He has won many times. From the Premier League to the Champions League. He has taken it everything.
The fact that the seafaring figure Daniel Levy fired Jose Mourinho as manager of Tottenham only one week before the League Cup final is surely not helping things, but that’s just how he works.
Real Madrid’s 2-0 victory against Borussia Dortmund in Saturday’s 2024 Champions League final at Wembley Stadium was the main attraction.
Since Mourinho and Gareth Bale were pundits for TNT Sports together, there was some Spurs theme leading up to the UK coverage of the match.
Although it was just for a short time, Bale ‘liked’ working under Mourinho while on loan at Tottenham from Real Madrid before to Euro 2020.
As he spoke to TNT Sport, the five-time Champions League champion acknowledged that he was not performing up to par at the time, but he maintained a “very good” rapport with the renowned coach at Hotspur Way.
It was a completely different era since games were being played behind closed doors because to the COVID pandemic.
Mourinho brought it up and said, “that was not football” because to the low attendance, dropping some truth bombs.
Unfortunately, Mourinho couldn’t resist taking a jab at Bale in his trademark cheeky fashion, bringing up the fact that the Welshman was ‘already dreaming about winning Augusta’ while in north London.

Real Madrid’s Jose Mourinho and Real Madrid’s Gareth Bale
When Fenerbahce’s new coach Rio Ferdinand wanted to know “What it was like being managed by Mourinho?” Bale interjected and addressed the question himself:
Mourinho said, “But that was not football,” and Bale agreed. The renowned trainer expanded by saying: “COVID. Stadiums devoid of spectators. There was no football there.
I had a hard time with that since it was different, Bale continued. That’s why I began consuming coffee in order to experience that rush. Jose was a delight to deal with. It brought me joy. Working with him was something I had always aspired to accomplish. This was at the tail end of my career, when I was far from my best, so it was brief. We had a great rapport, and I enjoyed collaborating with him.
“At that time, he was already thinking about winning Augusta,” Mourinho quipped.
As the Champions League finalist, Real Madrid prevailed against Borussia Dortmund.
Feelings that Spurs supporters will all too familiar with. Dortmund supporters will be very proud of their team and their journey to the Champions League final, but their spirits will be at an all-time low.
Throughout, the German club was considered an underdog. Return to the Group of Death that included Newcastle United if you must. There was no way out of it for them, even without backing.
Even Tottenham, managed by Mauricio Pochettino, had a same predicament. Beloved for reaching the final. Fans, however, would want to forget about Liverpool’s loss in Madrid.
But that’s the reality of competing with heavyweights from Europe. The Reds’ six championships aren’t coincidental.
And there’s a good reason Real Madrid is crowned king of Europe—they’ve won an incredible fifteen championships and are still going strong.
Not to mention that a certain Kylian Mbappe will be showing up at their door in the near future. It would not be shocking if they maintain their dominance in the future.
