Frank must finally offload £100k-p/w Spurs dud who’s like a “speedboat without a brain

Tottenham Hotspur have gone through a chaotic period in the last couple of seasons, and the impact of Ange Postecoglou’s time in charge is still being felt around the club.

His spell was full of excitement, frustration, unpredictability and bold decisions, but in the end, it was a journey that collapsed far more dramatically than expected. Postecoglou managed to guide Spurs to a fifth-place Premier League finish in the 2023/24 season, a result that many thought would create a foundation for long-term improvement.

Instead, his final year in North London unravelled in painful fashion, as the team slid down the table and he eventually lost his job.

The most shocking part of Postecoglou’s final campaign came with Tottenham finishing 17th in the Premier League, losing 22 matches in the process. No team in the history of the competition had ever lost that many games without being relegated.

For all the chaos on the pitch, the one bright moment came in Europe, as the 60-year-old somehow guided Tottenham to a Europa League triumph, ending a 17-year trophy drought. But even that achievement could not save him, and the club chose to part ways with him in the summer.

With Thomas Frank stepping in, a new era has begun, but it is also clear that several players brought in under the previous manager may no longer fit into the club’s plans.

Spurs are preparing for the January transfer window, and many of Postecoglou’s signings are now at risk of being moved on. Dominic Solanke is one of the players who could be pushed towards the exit door.

Signed for a club-record £65m fee in 2024, his time at Tottenham has been defined more by injuries than goals. He has managed only 31 league minutes this season and has not been available when Frank needed attacking reinforcements early in his tenure. Moving him on in January could free up funds for a more reliable centre-forward.

Manor Solomon is another player who looks close to saying goodbye. The Israeli winger arrived under Ange with high hopes but never managed to leave a meaningful impression. With just six senior appearances for Tottenham, and several loan spells along the way, his future clearly lies elsewhere. Now at Villarreal and performing far better with five goal contributions in six matches, a permanent sale feels almost certain.

Despite Frank improving Spurs’ overall performances, major issues still sit beneath the surface. Tottenham’s away form has been outstanding this season, with four wins and a draw from their first five league games away from home.

But the home form has been alarming, with only one win in front of their supporters. This inconsistency has highlighted just how much work remains before the team can truly compete at the top level again.

One of the players struggling to keep up with the demands of the system is Brennan Johnson. Spurs signed the Welsh forward from Nottingham Forest for £47.5m in the summer of 2023, a fee that raised eyebrows across the league.

Last season, Johnson managed to deliver 18 goals across all competitions, making him Tottenham’s top scorer. But those numbers masked a deeper issue his performances were inconsistent, and many of his goals came during a period when the team was already losing control of matches.

This season, Johnson has fallen sharply down the pecking order following the arrival of Mohammed Kudus. He has only started five league games and scored twice, with his last goal coming back in August.

The decline becomes even clearer when looking at his underlying numbers, which show a player struggling to influence games in any meaningful way.

Below is a table highlighting his Premier League statistics for the 2025/26 season:

Statistic (per 90)Tally
Games played11
Games started5
Goals scored2
Dribbles completed0.5
Dribble success rate42%
Shots on target0.3
Shot on target accuracy30%
Big chances missed2

These numbers paint the picture of a player low on confidence and struggling to find his place in the side. talkSPORT’s Simon Jordan even described him as a “work in progress” and compared him to “a speedboat without a brain,” a harsh but revealing assessment of his current form.

With Kudus performing well and Johnson unable to regain momentum, Spurs may have no choice but to consider selling him in January. His £100k-per-week wages add further pressure on the club to make a decision sooner rather than later. Tottenham invested heavily in him, but if they keep him much longer, they risk losing a large chunk of that investment.

At this point, a clean break seems ideal for both the club and the player. Johnson needs a new environment, and Tottenham need funds to strengthen other areas of the squad. A fresh start in the coming months could help Frank continue the rebuild and push Spurs further up the Premier League table as the season progresses.
