Former Tottenham man tips Postecoglou to brutally axe £40m star and replace him with Man Utd target
Former Tottenham scout Bryan King has stirred speculation by suggesting that the potential signing of Eberechi Eze could signal the end for James Maddison at Spurs.
With Tottenham reportedly interested in Eze, who has also attracted attention from Manchester United and Chelsea, this move could have significant implications for the club’s current lineup.
Eberechi Eze has been on Tottenham’s radar for some time. The Crystal Palace star, with a £60 million release clause in his contract, had an impressive 2023/24 season, scoring 11 goals and providing four assists in 27 league appearances.
Eze’s performance, averaging a goal contribution every 137.6 minutes, has made him a hot commodity in the transfer market.
Former Tottenham defender Alan Hutton has endorsed Eze’s potential value for money, stating, “I think he could go and be a shining star so £60million is right.
You look at some of the prices that are getting banded around now for players that aren’t as good, so I can understand that. If he’s going to be available for that price, I think Levy will spend it.”

Bryan King believes that signing Eze could lead to James Maddison’s exit from Tottenham. “Eze would be an exciting signing, he is a very good player,” King told Tottenham News. “But he reminds me a lot of Maddison. Does this therefore suggest that Maddison’s time with Tottenham could be up?”
King’s comments come in the wake of Maddison’s inconsistent form last season. After a strong start, Maddison’s performance declined following an ankle injury in November, and he struggled to regain his form. This dip resulted in his omission from Gareth Southgate’s final England Euro 2024 squad.
Maddison’s difficulties in the latter half of the season have raised questions about his future at Tottenham. “Maddison started off very brightly but then he disappointed himself and the club in the second half of the season. His attitude went downhill and he seemed to get involved in things on and off the field which were unnecessary,” King added.
Despite these issues, it seems unlikely that Tottenham would sell Maddison after investing £40 million in him last summer. However, the arrival of Eze could create competition and potentially push Maddison to elevate his game.
While Eze and Maddison share similarities, there is potential for both to fit into Ange Postecoglou’s system. Both players excel in the number 10 role but are also versatile enough to play in various attacking positions.
Eze’s ability to operate off either flank could complement Maddison’s playmaking skills, providing Postecoglou with multiple tactical options.
