Former Tottenham Hotspur defender resigns after alleged racist gesture

Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Mauricio Taricco has found himself at the centre of a major controversy after being accused of making a racist gesture during a match in South Korea.

The situation has escalated quickly, and Taricco has now chosen to resign from his coaching role, bringing an emotional and unexpected end to his time in Asian football.

Taricco, who joined Tottenham Hotspur in 1998, was a tough and reliable left-back who made 130 appearances for the club over four seasons. Before his move to London, he had impressed at Ipswich Town, and after leaving Spurs, he would go on to have a brief spell with West Ham United.

Following the end of his playing career, he moved naturally into coaching, working across different countries and environments.

His coaching journey included roles as an assistant manager at Sunderland, AEK Athens and Real Betis, allowing him to build a reputation as a hardworking and experienced coach trusted by multiple managers.

Recently, Taricco reunited with former Spurs midfielder Gus Poyet, serving as part of the coaching staff at Jeonbuk Motors in South Korea. It was a fresh chapter in his coaching career, but it has quickly turned into one of the most difficult moments he has ever faced.

During a heated exchange with a referee over a penalty decision, Taricco reportedly shouted “racista,” the Spanish word for racist, before allegedly making a slanted-eye gesture.

The gesture was immediately taken as a racial insult by officials and observers in South Korea, leading to widespread criticism and an official investigation.

Taricco insists that the situation has been misunderstood and that he never intended to insult anyone through racism or discrimination. Despite defending himself, the accusations have taken a toll, and he has now announced that he will leave his role at the end of the season.

His statement, delivered with clear frustration and sadness, expressed disappointment that his explanation of the incident was ignored and that he feels unfairly labelled.

In his statement, he emphasised that throughout his career, he has worked with people from different cultures and backgrounds without any issues, and he has always seen that as one of the greatest privileges of his life.

He said he now feels forced to move on for the sake of safety, peace of mind and fairness, adding that he cannot remain in an environment where he feels misjudged by what he describes as “self-proclaimed” authorities. Taricco also expressed deep gratitude to the club, players and fans of Jeonbuk Motors for their support and for allowing him to be part of their history.

He made it clear that the positive memories will stay with him, even though this controversy has brought his time in South Korea to an abrupt close.

Jeonbuk Motors have since responded to the situation as well, making it clear that they believe the accusations have been exaggerated. The club stated that they do not see Taricco’s actions as deliberate racial discrimination and that the incident should be judged with more balance and understanding.

They also confirmed that they intend to appeal the decision and will continue supporting their assistant coach until the process is complete. Their message suggested that they hope Taricco can clear his name and avoid leaving the club under such negative circumstances.

This incident has put a spotlight on cultural misunderstandings in football, especially when emotions run high during a match. A gesture or word may carry different meanings across regions, and situations can escalate quickly when interpreted through the lens of local sensitivities.

For Taricco, the consequences have been severe, but he maintains that the accusations do not reflect who he is or how he has conducted himself throughout his long career.

As the appeal process unfolds, the future remains uncertain. What is clear, however, is that this chapter has left a mark on both Taricco and Jeonbuk Motors, who now must navigate the emotional and professional impact of an incident that has spiralled far beyond a simple disagreement on the pitch.
