In the world of football transfers, a new opportunity appears to be opening up for Tottenham Hotspur. The club has been linked with a potential move for a former player, Dennis Cirkin, who is reportedly willing to stall on contract talks with his current club, Sunderland, in the hope of returning to North London.
This potential move is seen as a way for manager Thomas Frank to address a specific issue that became clear during Tottenham’s recent 1-1 home draw with Wolves.
While Spurs have performed well defensively this season, conceding only four goals in their first six Premier League matches, their attack has struggled at times.
The draw with Wolves was a prime example, where the team needed a late goal from Joao Palhinha to salvage a point. A key problem in that match was the lack of attacking drive from the full-backs, with both Djed Spence and Destiny Udogie failing to create the wide overloads that are so crucial for a team’s attacking play.
Despite having what he has called “three good full-backs” to choose from, including Pedro Porro, Frank is well aware that he needs more cover on the left side of the defense.

This is where Cirkin comes into the picture. According to TBR Football, Cirkin is ready to put a pause on contract negotiations with Sunderland, who he helped gain promotion to the top flight.
The talented 23-year-old has yet to play a single minute for Sunderland this season, partly because the club has brought in two new left-back options, Arthur Masuaku and Reinildo Mandava. However, his contract situation, which is due to expire in the summer, also plays a big role.
This is where Tottenham can benefit from his situation. Frank doesn’t have a natural backup for Udogie on the left, often having to use the right-footed Spence in that role.
With Ben Davies now primarily seen as a center-back, a move for Cirkin makes perfect sense. Cirkin, who scored three goals and provided two assists last season, would offer genuine cover and a different attacking dynamic.
His style is seen as more attack-minded than both Udogie and Spence, which could be a huge benefit for a Spurs side that has struggled to create chances in recent matches.
The fact that he could be available for a cut-price fee in the January transfer window makes him an even more attractive option.
As the January window approaches, there’s a strong belief that Tottenham will look to bring Cirkin back to the club where he began his career.
The move would not only provide much-needed depth but could also add a new layer to the team’s attack. The coming weeks will show whether Cirkin’s decision to wait on a new contract pays off, and if Tottenham can secure a player who could be a valuable addition to the squad.
