Expert: Postecoglou can cut ties with Spurs defender due to contract clause

Tottenham News is pleased to introduce John Wenham from Lilywhite Rose as our exclusive columnist. Each week, he’ll provide expert insights on the most significant topics at Spurs.

John Wenham believes that Japhet Tanganga will be battling for his future at Spurs during the second half of the season while on loan at Millwall, following revelations that he might become a free agent sooner than initially thought.

Tanganga has joined Millwall on loan for the remainder of the season, having been recalled from his unsuccessful loan spell with FC Augsburg in Germany, where he failed to make a single appearance (Tottenham Hotspur Official Website, 18 January).

In 2020, Tottenham officially announced a contract extension for the defender until 2025 (27 July 2020). However, as reported by the Evening Standard earlier this month (17 January), the 24-year-old is actually out of contract at the end of this season. Spurs hold the option to extend his deal by one year until 2025.

In light of this news, Wenham believes Tanganga has no choice but to prove his worth now.

In an exclusive statement to Tottenham News, Wenham said, “It was interesting to discover that Tanganga’s contract has the option to extend for the final year and doesn’t run until 2025 as we were told when he signed it.”

“Why that is interesting is because it basically means that if he doesn’t perform at Millwall, Tottenham can cut ties with him in the summer, and he can just be released on a free transfer.”

“If he does perform, I think Spurs will activate the option, and I think they’ll then try to sell him, or perhaps he will be offered one last chance to prove himself.”

“Should he struggle to get a run of games, Spurs will cut ties and continue with their rebuild, which has been happening at a rapid pace so far.”
