Ex-PL ref reacts to ‘disgraceful’ Tottenham vs Villa scenes, FA may review one player

Tottenham Hotspur are now bracing themselves for possible punishment from the Football Association after ugly scenes marred the end of their FA Cup third-round defeat to Aston Villa. What should have been a routine conclusion to a competitive cup tie instead descended into chaos, with players from both sides involved in a heated confrontation that has since been described as disgraceful by a former FIFA official.

Aston Villa secured a 2-1 win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on 10 January, taking control of the match early on. Unai Emery’s side showed real purpose in the first half and were rewarded with two goals before the break.

Emi Buendia opened the scoring with a calm finish, setting the tone for the visitors, before Morgan Rogers doubled the lead just before half-time. Tottenham struggled to find rhythm during the opening 45 minutes and were left with a mountain to climb.

Spurs did respond after the interval, and Wilson Odobert pulled one back in the 54th minute to give the home crowd some hope. However, despite some late pressure, that goal proved to be nothing more than a consolation.

Aston Villa defended well, managed the game smartly, and saw out the victory to progress in the competition.

The tension inside the stadium was clear throughout the match. Villa supporters took aim at Tottenham manager Thomas Frank with chants and taunts, adding to the pressure on a Spurs side already going through a difficult period. That frustration finally boiled over at full-time when tempers flared between players from both teams.

The flashpoint appeared to come when Ollie Watkins’ celebrations upset Joao Palhinha. What started as a verbal exchange quickly escalated, drawing in Morgan Rogers, who did not take kindly to Palhinha’s reaction.

The situation intensified as players began pulling and pushing, with Micky van de Ven and several others rushing in as the confrontation grew. Thomas Frank could only watch from the touchline as his players became embroiled in the chaos.

There was also controversy earlier in the game involving Pedro Porro. The Tottenham right-back was seen reacting angrily from the bench after a strong challenge by Palhinha on Watkins. Porro appeared to direct abuse towards the match officials, an incident that has since been noted and could yet be reviewed by the FA.

Former Premier League referee and ex-FIFA official Keith Hackett has since weighed in on the scenes. Speaking about the incident, he made it clear that the governing body is unlikely to ignore what happened.

He explained that the FA are expected to charge both Tottenham and Aston Villa for failing to control their players, a standard response in situations like this. Hackett also pointed out that any past disciplinary records could be taken into account when deciding potential punishments.

Hackett added that the FA may also take a closer look at Porro’s reaction from the bench, although he does not expect the defender to face a suspension. Still, the possibility of fines or warnings remains, and both clubs will now wait to see how the situation is handled.

The defeat itself has only increased the pressure on Thomas Frank, whose position is already under serious scrutiny. With results going against Spurs and frustration growing among supporters, this latest setback does little to calm the storm. Many fans will now be anxiously watching for both on-field consequences and off-field decisions from the FA.

There were also fitness concerns for Tottenham on the night. Dominic Solanke made his long-awaited return from injury, coming on in the 83rd minute in an attempt to spark a late comeback. While his return was a positive moment, it came too late to change the outcome of the match.

More worrying for Spurs was the sight of Richarlison being forced off after around half an hour with what appeared to be a hamstring problem.

The Brazilian has been Tottenham’s most reliable striker this season, and his fitness is crucial. Supporters will now be holding their breath as they await updates, knowing that another injury could further complicate an already troubled campaign.

For Tottenham, the loss to Villa was damaging enough. The aftermath, however, could yet prove even more costly.
