Big Newcastle development could inflict £35M Tottenham blow

According to insiders who spoke with Football Insider, Newcastle United’s Champions League withdrawal may cost the Premier League a fifth European qualifying slot.

Following Wednesday night’s 2-1 victory against AC Milan at St. James’ Park, Newcastle was eliminated from the European competition for the 2023–24 campaign after placing fourth in Group F.

Newcastle and Manchester United are the only English clubs eliminated this season from the group stage.

Due to their brief stay in Europe, England is unlikely to get a further qualifying position for the Champions League the following season, since Germany and Italy have more coefficient points than them.

Tottenham, which now sits fifth in the Premier League standings, is the side most likely to lose out on a spot in the Champions League in 2024–2025.

If Spurs participated in the Champions League the following season, they would have been guaranteed at least £35 million, but that opportunity has now been lost.

An additional slot in the new Swiss-style format will be awarded to the top two ranking countries at the conclusion of this season.

Right now, England is in third place with 12.13 coefficient points, behind Italy in second place with 13.14 and Germany at the top of the list with 13.36.

The average coefficient of all European teams competing for each nation is used to compute the points; a victory is worth two points, a draw is worth one, and a loss is worth zero.

Bonus points are also given for advancing further in a tournament; for example, five points are rewarded for making it to the round of sixteen in the Champions League.

England’s coefficient points will be accumulated by Man City, Arsenal, Brighton, West Ham, Liverpool, and Aston Villa when they get through to the knockout rounds of all three European tournaments.
