Spurs Top Target Johan Lange Could Now Signed For £17M This Summer, Pens New Contract With £42m Release Clause

Tottenham Hotspur’s summer transfer activity was marked by several strategic signings, including the acquisition of Archie Gray, a player tipped to follow in the footsteps of Declan Rice. The North London club also bolstered their squad with the arrivals of Wilson Odobert and Dominic Solanke.

However, one potential target has now likely slipped out of Tottenham’s reach after significantly increasing his market value with a new long-term contract at Sevilla.

One of the players on Tottenham’s radar this summer was Loïc Badé, a promising French central defender playing for Sevilla. Badé caught the attention of several top clubs, including Tottenham, following a strong performance for the Spanish side.

His impressive displays led to speculation about a potential move to the Premier League, with Spurs among the clubs keen on securing his services.

Badé himself acknowledged the interest from Tottenham, telling Estadio Deportivo, “There is a little bit of satisfaction. When a great club like Tottenham is interested, it’s because you’re doing good things. But on the other hand, there is something that tells you to be calm, you have to work and concentrate on games.”

Despite the interest from Tottenham, Badé has now committed his future to Sevilla by signing a new contract that runs until July 2029. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the new deal includes a release clause of €50 million (£42 million).

This marks a significant increase from the €20 million (£17 million) price tag reported during the summer transfer window when clubs like VfB Stuttgart and AS Roma also showed interest in the young defender.

The new contract effectively doubles Badé’s market value, making it much more difficult for Tottenham or any other club to secure his signature in the near future. Given the steep rise in his release clause, it is highly unlikely that Tottenham will pursue a deal for the France U23 international, especially considering the club’s current options in central defense.

While missing out on Badé might seem like a setback, Tottenham’s decision not to pursue the defender could actually work in their favor. The club’s focus on youth development, particularly in defense, has been emphasized by manager Ange Postecoglou. Tottenham has two highly-rated young center-backs, Luka Vuskovic and Ashley Phillips, who are poised to break into the first team.

Postecoglou has expressed his desire to ensure these young talents have a clear pathway into the senior squad, rather than bringing in another defender who might block their development.

In an interview with Football London, Postecoglou stated, “We’ve got Ashley Phillips, we’ve got young Luka Vuskovic available next year. Two young center-backs. I don’t want to block their pathway by doing something now (last minute).”

This commitment to nurturing homegrown talent could pay off in the long run, as Vuskovic and Phillips have both shown immense potential. By allowing these young players the opportunity to develop and gain experience, Tottenham could be setting the stage for a strong, defensively sound team in the coming years.

Tottenham’s transfer strategy under Ange Postecoglou appears to be one of careful consideration and long-term planning. While the club missed out on signing Loïc Badé, their focus on promoting young talents like Vuskovic and Phillips demonstrates a commitment to building a sustainable squad that can compete at the highest level for years to come.
