Conte want special PL star badly, who’s now worth £62M but got Richarlison instead

Tottenham Hotspur has long been home to some of the most exceptional talents in football. From Luka Modrić and Gareth Bale in the early 2010s to the emergence of Harry Kane and the current leadership of Son Heung-min, the club has produced players who have thrilled fans and elevated the team to new heights.

However, the club’s history is also marked by a few expensive signings that failed to meet expectations, and Richarlison seems to be the latest addition to that list.

Richarlison arrived at Tottenham in June 2022 with great expectations, following a successful stint at Everton.

Spurs spent a staggering £60 million on the Brazilian forward, believing he could replicate the form that had earned him acclaim at his former club.

During his time at Everton, Richarlison had netted 53 goals and provided 13 assists in 152 appearances, making him a key figure in their attack.

However, his form took a significant dip upon his move to London, leading to frustration among fans and management alike.

In his first season with Tottenham, Richarlison managed just three goals and four assists across 25 appearances—a far cry from his Everton days.

Although his performance saw some improvement the following year, with 12 goals and four assists in 31 matches, it still fell short of the expectations tied to his hefty price tag.

The club’s decision to invest £65 million in Dominic Solanke during the summer transfer window suggests that the management no longer sees Richarlison as their primary option for the number nine role.

Given the fee paid and the limited impact so far, it’s becoming harder to argue against the notion that Richarlison’s move has been a disappointment.

Adding insult to injury is Tottenham’s failed pursuit of another player who is now flourishing at a rival club.

In the January transfer window, just six months before signing Richarlison, Spurs were in the running to secure the services of Colombian international Luis Diaz, who was then plying his trade at Porto.

According to reports, Antonio Conte, the manager at the time, saw Diaz as a key target to strengthen the squad. The club made a £37.6 million bid, which Porto rejected.

Liverpool, sensing an opportunity, swooped in and signed Diaz for an initial fee of £37.5 million with an additional £12.5 million in add-ons. Since joining Liverpool, Diaz has gone through various challenges on and off the pitch, but his form this season has been nothing short of spectacular.

In just six games, Diaz has already scored five goals and provided one assist, making him one of the standout performers in the Premier League.

The above table illustrates how Diaz’s contributions have been consistent across seasons, with this year showing a remarkable increase in his goal involvement. His market value has also skyrocketed, with Transfermarkt now valuing him at around €75 million (£62 million), significantly higher than what Tottenham initially bid.

In hindsight, securing Diaz could have changed the trajectory for Tottenham, especially under the attacking philosophy of current manager Ange Postecoglou.

Diaz’s pace, creativity, and finishing ability seem tailor-made for the kind of high-energy football Postecoglou promotes. While all clubs occasionally miss out on top targets, missing out on Diaz, only to sign Richarlison later for more money, now looks like a costly mistake.

Richarlison still has time to turn his Tottenham career around, but with each passing game, the likelihood of him fulfilling his £60 million price tag seems to dwindle.

In contrast, Luis Diaz has cemented his place as one of the most dangerous attackers in the league, a player Tottenham could have signed for significantly less. Time will tell if Richarlison can redeem himself, but for now, it appears that Spurs’ gamble has not paid off.
