Paul Scholes makes claim about Man United overtaking Tottenham Hotspur
Paul Scholes thinks Manchester United can surpass Tottenham Hotspur to take fifth place, but he also acknowledged that his old team needs to perform far better than they have in recent weeks.
Spurs and Aston Villa were both staring down United two weeks ago, but Erik Ten Hag’s team has now suffered two straight losses to Man City and Fulham.
Tottenham defeated Crystal Palace 3-1 on Saturday after falling down by a goal, moving six points clear of Manchester United with a game remaining.
With one game remaining, Villa leads the Lilywhites by five points. Spurs will want to close the gap as the two teams meet at Villa Park on Sunday for a six-point match.
Does Man United really think they can qualify for the Champions League?
Depending on how the English teams fare in Europe this season, fifth place may still be sufficient to guarantee a position in the Champions League for the next season. Scholes acknowledged that the Red Devils’ best chance at this point is to finish in fifth place.
“Yes, I think so,” he responded to Premier League Productions on March 3, 24 at 6:00 p.m., when asked if Man Utd needed a miracle to finish fourth. They need to overcome Aston Villa and Tottenham.
“See, Villa still have a nice appearance. They don’t seem to have the experience heading into a run-in where there is significant pressure to try and place fourth.
But what is Man United these days? Eleven points? It seems really challenging to me. They defeated Aston Villa a few weeks ago while I was here, and after that, they lost to Fulham, which made me think they had a chance. If you hope to finish in fourth or fifth place, which is conceivable, you cannot lose to Fulham at home.
The best they can aspire for is fifth place. How many points are they behind Tottenham, who also appear to be doing well, by six points? They are playing so badly that they cannot afford to bother about anyone else. All you need to do is focus on taking care of yourself and try to win the games in front of them.

Man Utd is hoping that Villa wins on Sunday in order to create a significant gap with Tottenham, forcing them and Spurs to fight for fifth place.
If Ange Postecolgou’s team triumphs at Villa Park, United’s chances of finishing in the top five will virtually vanish, and a two-horse race for fourth will be guaranteed.
