Lineker disagrees bluntly with what Dyche said after Everton controversy v Spurs

Sean Dyche was furious over his team’s goal that was disallowed in Everton’s match against Tottenham, but he could see all sides, according to Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer.

After 50 minutes, Dominic Calvert-Lewin felt he had pulled the Toffees back into the match, but VAR intervened and penalized Andre Gomes for fouling Emerson Royal in the build-up to the goal.

One of the most divisive choices made throughout the games on Saturday was this one. Although both former England strikers agreed that VAR had overturned the goal, they could also see the Everton manager’s ire.

On BBC’s Match of the Day on Saturday, December 23, Lineker said, “Sean Dyche was very unhappy with the goal that was annulled by VAR but… it is a foul.”

Shearer went on, “I completely understand what Sean [Dyche] is saying since the referee and assistant referee didn’t believe it was a foul. Is that a howler, even if it’s definitely a foul?

Turning Point

The disallowed goal by Calvert-Lewin turned the tide of a fiercely contested match against Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham team.

Everton gained momentum in the encounter and opened the score at 2-1. However, Gomes’ foul disallowed the striker’s goal, therefore the Toffees had to wait until the 82nd minute for Gomes to score again, making the score 2-1. This time, it held.

In the last seconds, Arnaut Danjuma had an opportunity to tie the score, but his shot struck the underside of the bar and came just inches short of crossing the goal line. For Everton, however, it was not to be as they lost their first match in six attempts.

Everton seemed to dominate in front of goal at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, even though they only had 39% of the possession throughout the game. They had 18 shots to Spurs’ 13 and 8 shots on target to Spurs’ 6. [FotMob]

If Guglielmo Vicario hadn’t made seven saves, Everton’s 1.78 xG over the home team’s 1.48 xG would have likely meant more goals than Spurs.
