Time to go: Ange must cash in on “average” Spurs dud who earns more than Van de Ven

Tottenham Hotspur had a lot of players leave last summer; Harry Kane was one of ten top players who left, either on loan or forever. This summer, there could be even more players leaving.

Since then, players like Eric Dier and Hugo Lloris have left in 2024, and Ange Postecoglou is likely to push even more players to leave. In fact, trade expert Fabrizio Romano has already said that “several players” may be allowed to leave.

Ryan Sessegnon, the once-jealous star player, is set to leave as a free agent. The former Fulham player has had a terrible run of injuries since joining for £25 million in 2019.

The Englishman might not be the only regular full-back to leave, as Emerson Royal and Djed Spence are also being tracked down. Sergio Reguilon, whose name wasn’t on Romano’s list, should also be sent packing.

Reguilon’s season in numbers

After spending the last two seasons on loan, the £32 million signing has been somewhat forgotten at N17. The roaming left back will return to his home country of Spain in 2022/23 to join Atletico Madrid, after having short stays at Manchester United and Brentford this time.

The Red Devils signed the six-cap Spain international on deadline day last summer, when both Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia were injured. He only played 12 times for Erik ten Hag’s team in all competitions, failing to score or set up a goal.

The team from Old Trafford then used a break option in the loan agreement in January. Reguilon then made the move back to London to join the Bees, which seemed to be a good deal for everyone.

Even though he got a red card against Burnley, the 27-year-old had a good time playing for Thomas Frank’s team. He had 16 games and four assists, doing well in what seems to be his best position as a wing-back.

However, the former Real Madrid player matches up well offensively against Tottenham rival Destiny Udogie. His defensive flaws are clear, as shown by the fact that he was dribbled past once per game and recovered far fewer balls than Udogie—a performance that earned him the nickname “so average it’s untrue” by members of the club.

Also called the “worst of the bunch” by Wenham, it may be easy to see why Postecoglou hasn’t paid any attention to him so far. According to Football Insider, he will be sold this summer to raise money.

How much Reguilon makes at Spurs

The much-maligned defender has been on loan in recent years, but according to Capology, he does get paid well when he’s back at his home club, where he makes about £53,000 a week, or £2.7 million a season.

Then, getting such an expensive asset off the pay bill must be a top goal, especially since Reguilon makes more than a few key players in Postecoglou’s team, like Micky van de Ven.

The huge Dutchman, who joined from Wolfsburg last summer in a £43 million deal, is said to be making “just” £53k-per-week, even though he has had a great first season in English football and has been called “one of the signings of the season” by Steph Houghton.

Notably, the agile centre back has scored three goals for the Lilywhites this season, which is more than Reguilon’s two goals in 67 games for the club.

And that poor record is even more proof of why the Spanish player needs to leave this summer. Postecoglou needs to build his own team with new players instead of relying on a mix of stars who came in under Jose Mourinho, Antonio Conte, and Nuno Espirito Santo.
