Ange eyes late Spurs swoop for Gallagher alternative who is similar to Bellingham
Even though the transfer window is almost over, the Lilywhites may still be able to add to their middle…
Tottenham Hotspur has already moved quickly and effectively to get their business done this month. Ange Postecoglou was in charge of the recent signings of Ragu Dragusin from Genoa and Timo Werner from RB Leipzig.
Both of those moves have made the Greek-Aussie’s choices better at different ends of the field. However, more people could still be needed in the middle of the field, where Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is said to be on his way soon.
With just over 24 hours left in the winter transfer window, there are many rumors that the north Londoners could try to sign Conor Gallagher from foes Chelsea. However, Gallagher isn’t the only exciting midfielder who may be moving to N17.
The Guardian said earlier this week that Spurs are thinking about making a move for Gallagher, who was wanted by Postecoglou over the summer. The Blues are said to be open to offers for the 23-year-old, though a £50m price tag has been mentioned.
Because of this, Spurs might look elsewhere to improve their middle. According to Swedish writer Anel Avdić, Lucas Bergvall, who is said to be a goal for Barcelona, has recently visited Tottenham’s training ground.
Spurs want to sign their own Kudus as soon as possible
News came out that an unknown Premier League club had made a €8m (£7m) deal for the Djugardens youngster. It’s possible that the Lilywhites are the ones who have made the move for the 17-year-old.
As expected, the youngster is still very young in his professional career in his home country of Sweden. He has only played 29 times for his current team’s first team so far, having played 12 times for his old club, Brommapojkarna, before leaving last year.
While that doesn’t give those at N17 a lot of information to go on, it does suggest that Bergvall would be a good replacement for Gallagher. He scored three goals and set up one other in 28 games last season, and the Chelsea player did the same in 2022–23.
For Postecoglou and his team, the one-cap Swede could be a better long-term and more affordable option than Gallagher. He also has sky-high potential; data analyst Ben Mattinson even says that he is “similar to [Jude] Bellingham” in a way because he can play in different midfield roles.
Of course, Bellingham is currently shining at Real Madrid, where he has scored 18 goals and set up eight others so far this season. He came on the scene at Birmingham City when he was only 16, just like Bergvall.
The big Englishman seems to be able to glide up the field from a deeper position while also sending a sharp forward pass to someone else. This is shown by the fact that he is in the top 17% of his European peers for successful take-ons per 90 minutes and in the top 1% for progressive passes per 90 minutes.
Even younger Bergvall seems to have some of the same skills. Mattinson has said that Bergvall is “strong with the ball and good at dribbling in tight spaces.” He loves to move the game forward by moving the ball or throwing it very well.
It will take a lot of work for the 6 foot 1 beauty to become as good as the 2023 Golden Boy winner, but comparisons to that player are a good sign for how well he could do under Postecoglou’s leadership. This makes him a good candidate to replace the expensive Gallagher.
