£39M+ down the drain: Spurs now being rinsed by Championship player who is cost £1M per 90min
In the midst of a fierce competition for Premier League Champions League qualifying, Tottenham Hotspur is rooting for Ange Postecoglou to have a successful conclusion to his first season in London.
Spurs were in urgent need of a reset after finishing ninth the previous season and losing Harry Kane to Bayern Munich. The Australian has provided exactly that, laying the foundation for a new era despite a lot of ups and downs.
While one of Postecoglou’s first actions was to ship out deadwood like Tanguy Ndombele and Davinson Sanchez, as well as getting rid of the out-of-favour Eric Dier from his system last month, there are still players who have not been shipped on that very much look like they have no chance of succeeding down N17. Several exciting additions have been made to shape the improving team.
Ryan Sessegnon’s signing with the Spurs
Ryan Sessegnon, who has only made one pitiful appearance this season—against Burnley in the FA Cup—is one player who is undoubtedly reaching the end of his Lilywhites career. He continues to struggle with fitness.
After starring in the second division and recording 25 goals and 18 assists in 120 appearances, the 19-year-old left-back—who was also capable of playing as a winger—was signed by Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino for a reported £25 million deal back in 2019.
Although Sessegnon is still just 23, he has to get control of his fitness as soon as possible in order to live up to the hype while playing for the Cottagers. Life on the big stage held such promise for this explosive flanker.
Cost of Ryan Sessegnon with the Spurs
Although Sessgnon has made 57 appearances for Tottenham so far, contributing four assists and three goals for his teammates, there is no denying that, following his extraordinary start, he has fallen from grace and may be nearing the end of his career at the club. His contract expires next summer.
Ryan, Sevigny, Tottenham, and Hotspur
Although his injury problems are regrettable, Jon Wenham, a Tottenham specialist, has said that he appears like a “Championship player” during his time on the field.
After deducting the player’s transfer price from his pay throughout his Tottenham tenure, the total cost to the club is estimated to be above £39 million.
To put that into context, Sessegnon has played 3,391 minutes for the team overall, according to the well-known football research site Transfermarkt. That means he has cost the team around £1 million per 90 minutes. That is a depressing read.

The ranking reveals that Sessegnon is easily above a variety of players who often compete in Postecoglou’s matchday preparations, and on par with first-team talents like Yves Bissouma and Micky van de Ven.
Since the club’s new chapter demands a certain ruthlessness to catch up with the Arsenals, Manchester City, and Liverpools of the Premier League, the unfortunate injury problems that have plagued much of his career are getting to the point where chairman Daniel Levy must decide whether keeping him on the books is a good idea.
Ultimately, Sessegnon is still only 23 years old and has a real shot at returning to prominence, but he would be better placed doing so away from Tottenham, where he can move to a side with a greater chance of earning a prominent, regularly starting spot.
