Maddison reveals what he told Maupay after mimicking goal celebration

The darts celebration at Tottenham Stadium got a lot of attention.
After Neal Maupay copied his goal celebration in Wednesday’s heated London game, Tottenham midfielder James Maddison told Neal Maupay the joke he meant to make fun of him.

In the 15th minute, Maupay scored from a rebound to give the Bees the lead. However, the French striker quickly became a thorn in the side of Spurs fans when he tackled several home players and was later booked for a foul on Dejan Kulusevski.

Shortly after scoring, TV cameras caught Maddison and Maupay yelling at each other while the Bees’ goal scorer winced and patted Maupay on the chest.

But Tottenham came out on top with three goals in the second half to win 3-2. It was a nail-biting finish after Ivan Toney scored in the last 30 minutes.

After halftime, Destiny Udogie tied the game. Seventy seconds later, Brennan Johnson scored, and the Welshman celebrated by doing the darts move.

Spurs won in the end when Richarlison scored their third goal and celebrated like Maddison always does. The midfielder later talked about his exchange with Maupay after the game.

Maddison shared with TNT Sports: “I just said that he probably hasn’t scored enough goals of his own to have his own celebration, so he had to steal mine.”

This was Maddison’s first start since November, when he hurt his ankle and had to miss a lot of time.

“It’s great to be back. When you’re hungry, doing what you love makes you remember why I love football,” he said. There were a lot of stoppages in the first half, which is how they were able to win. In the second half, we had a lot of chances and scored some goals, but it’s never easy at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium—there are always a lot of goals.
