Tottenham suffer major blow as star player is keen to sign a new deal
Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou’s pursuit of attacking midfielder Sebastian Szymanski might face a setback as the player contemplates signing a new contract with Fenerbahce.
The Poland international has drawn interest from Spurs following an impressive season with 12 goals and 14 assists in all competitions.
A recent report by Turkish outlet Star indicated Postecoglou’s keen interest in Szymanski, with Spurs sending scouts to observe him in a match against Samsunspor. The Lilywhites were reportedly willing to make significant efforts to secure his signature for the upcoming season.
However, Tottenham’s transfer aspirations have hit a snag, as Polish outlet Meczyki has disclosed that there will be no developments with Szymanski in the current transfer window.
Fenerbahce is expected to open talks regarding the player’s future in February or March. The Turkish club may offer the 24-year-old a pay raise to encourage him to stay for another season, but potential offers for Szymanski could influence his final decision.
Szymanski joined Fenerbahce last summer from Dynamo Moscow for a reported fee of around £8 million, and his current contract extends until 2027.
The midfielder had a successful loan spell with Feyenoord during his time with Moscow, contributing 10 goals and seven assists in 40 appearances. He has also earned 30 caps for Poland, starting their final group game at the 2022 World Cup against France.
If Postecoglou deems Szymanski a good fit for his team, he may instruct Tottenham officials to present an offer that could capture Fenerbahce’s attention.
The former Celtic manager has orchestrated a transformation in the Spurs side this season, displaying some of their best football in years.
Despite topping the Premier League table in September, Tottenham faced a setback in November with three consecutive defeats. While they resumed winning ways in December, recent league matches have posed challenges, and they currently sit fifth in the table, three points behind fourth-place Aston Villa.
