Spurs favourites to seal electric late signing, he is a Johnson upgrade
Spurs have already signed Timo Werner and Radu Dragusin to their first team this month, and reports say they want to finish a third deal before the end of the January transfer window.
Tottenham is in the lead to get an attacker
Football Insider says Spurs are in the lead to sign a young winger, but the player wouldn’t join the team until the end of the season.
The story says that Newcastle United is in the running to sign Club Brugge youngster Antonio Nusa, who The Guardian said is worth £25 million. However, the Lilywhites are currently in the lead and will have to deal with competition from their Premier League rivals.
It says that they need to get money to sign the attacker, possibly by selling Miguel Almiron, and that they have talked about a move for him internally. This means that Daniel Levy may have a hard time getting a late-season deal for the skilled star.
Spurs beat out their rivals by offering to loan him back to Brugge for the rest of the season. He wants to stay at the club until the summer, so this is a great deal for Spurs.
If Ange Postecoglou can beat Newcastle to Nusa’s signing this month, he could get a better player than Brennan Johnson, but only for the 2024–25 season.
This season has been hard for Brennan Johnson
The Wales international was signed by Spurs from Nottingham Forest last summer, but he hasn’t been able to consistently play well on the side.
With 18 Premier League games and 15 starts so far this season, the 22-year-old genius has scored one goal and set up four others.
On average, 3.47 goals are expected to be scored by Johnson each season. He has also set up four goals, which is 1.85 helpers per game.
This means that the young forward has missed a lot of chances to score with the chances that his teammates have set up for him, while his teammates have done better with the chances that he has made for them.
Stats that show Nusa might be better than Johnson
Spurs could get a better player than the one they already have by signing Nusa. He has been playing well for Brugge this season, so Spurs should be excited to get him.
According to expert Ben Mattinson, the 18-year-old genius has “electric” speed. The table above shows that he has done better than his xG and his teammates have let him down a bit in front of goal this season in the Pro League.
Johnson has two more league assists than Nusa, even though his chances have led to fewer xAs. On the other hand, Johnson has two fewer goals than Nusa, even though he has set up 1.05 more goals.
Based on how they’ve played so far this season, these numbers show that the Norway international, who has three assists in three European Championship matches for his country, could be much more useful in the final third than the present Spurs attacker.
Should Nusa be able to carry over his good form to the Premier League, he could be much more clinical with his finishing and give his teammates better chances to score, which is why Postecoglou should stick with him instead of Johnson.
He is also four years younger than the Welshman, making him 18 years old. He could be a great long-term deal who gets better over time.
