Postecoglou says £165k/week Tottenham star a big doubt for United trip

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has acknowledged that Cristian Romero is unlikely to be ready for Sunday’s Premier League clash against Manchester United, indicating that the fixture has come too soon for the defender.

In a conversation with football.london, Postecoglou revealed that the £165,000-a-week center-back has recently returned to training after recovering from his injury lay-off.

Romero, a pivotal figure for Tottenham this season, sustained a hamstring strain in Spurs’ 2-1 win over Everton just before Christmas, leading to his absence in subsequent matches.

While confirming Romero’s return to training, Postecoglou expressed skepticism about the 25-year-old featuring in the upcoming match against Manchester United.

Despite the positive development of Romero rejoining the squad, it is deemed a bit premature for him to be back in action this weekend.

The Spurs boss provided updates on other injured players, including Ben Davies, Giovani Lo Celso, and Dane Scarlett. Davies, who suffered a hamstring injury last week, is expected to be sidelined for approximately a month.

Lo Celso’s condition is a bit more challenging to assess, and further tests are scheduled for Monday. Scarlett sustained a muscle injury in training, specifically a hamstring issue.

Postecoglou noted, “The only one to join the main group today is Romero, and that’s it, I think. He’s just started training, so it’s fair to say it might be a bit close this weekend.”

Tottenham has recently regained momentum, securing four victories in their last five league matches and progressing in the FA Cup third round.

While Romero’s potential absence against Manchester United is regrettable, the positive news of his return to training bodes well for his swift return to action.
