Tottenham injury update: Van de Ven, Maddison, Romero return dates

Tottenham hopes to welcome back two more players to full health before the end of 2024, despite two fresh injury worries.

While Alejo Veliz and Pape Matar Sarr were both forced off against Bournemouth in tears and will now have scans, Micky van de Ven is just a few weeks away from making his comeback after a two-month absence. James Maddison ought to come next.

Cristian Romero is yet another casualty of the Christmas season. He was substituted off against Everton and will miss another month of action. There are already eight first-team players sidelined.

The Latest information on Tottenham injuries and expected recovery date can be found here:

Cristian Romero

The defender sustained an injury during the victory against Everton. Although Ange Postecoglou was originally optimistic about the injury, it was revealed a few days later that Romero would be out for “four or five weeks.”

“He had a scan the other day and has a hamstring strain,” he said to reporters. We anticipate having him for four or five weeks.”

Possible date of return: February 2024

Pape Matar Sarr

After getting sent off against Bournemouth on New Year’s Eve, Pape Matar Sarr broke down in tears. The youthful midfield player would shortly be leaving for the Africa Cup of Nations.

“Pape feels his hamstring and he’s emotional because he wants to go away with his national team,” Postecoglou said after the game. It’s a major competition for them. That’s how this season has gone, in a sense. With the exception of his goal, he was excellent early in the game once again until suffering an injury.

“I hope it’s not too bad so he can still go and continue to support his nation, but it is disappointing for him.

Soon after, Sarr sought to assuage apprehensions of a big layoff by writing on X (previously Twitter): “More fear than harm, see you at CAN [AFCON]!”

Perhaps not until February, depending on Senegal’s performance at the AFCON, will Sarr don a Spurs uniform again.

Possible date of return: February 2024

James Maddison

The England playmaker has not appeared since November 6, when he was injured on his ankle during Chelsea’s wild London derby loss.

A follow-up scan revealed how serious the problem was, and Maddison is not anticipated to return until the New Year, much to her annoyance.

On December 22, Postecoglou said, “[He] is] nowhere near being in the reckoning for any first-team duties yet.”

Possible date of return: January 2024

Micky van der Ven

Similar to Maddison, Van van Ven had to leave the game against Chelsea due to a hamstring injury.

However, he seems to be recovering well enough to make a comeback in the first few weeks of January.

On December 27, Postecoglou said, “He’s getting closer.” We’re going to visit him in January. Burnley [in the FA Cup] seems unlikely, but Manchester United may be.”

Possible date of return: January 2024

Alejo Veliz

Another player pulled off due to injuries after a collision with a Bournemouth player was the teenage striker. Veliz, who had just been inserted in the 82nd minute, attempted to play on after the incident, but it soon became clear that he couldn’t.

In some extremely upsetting events, Veliz staggered to the touchline clearly disturbed, and his teammates on the bench soon comforted him.

Postecoglou later stated: “It just shows the character of the boy because he knew we had no more substitutions and he just wanted to keep going. Alejo was in a lot of pain and we’d already done our substitutions, so we were trying to get it out to him to just lay down so we can get him off.”

“I’m not sure the extent of what he’s done but we’ll find out.”

Possible date of return: Not specified

Ivan Perisic

Perisic had a catastrophic ACL injury while training back in September, and it seems unlikely that he will play again this season.

The summer contract of the Croatian international is over, and it’s possible that he’s played his last game for Tottenham.

Possible time of return: 2024 summer

Ryan Sesegnon

Due to persistent hamstring issues, Sessegnon’s last Spurs game was in February.

Although it was thought that Sessegnon had resumed light training, Postecoglou disclosed earlier this month that Sessegnon had experienced “a number of setbacks” and declined to provide an estimated time of return.

Possible date of return: Not specified

Manor Solomon

Summertime acquisition Solomon hasn’t played since early October, when he had knee surgery.

Spurs recently made public pictures of the forward working out alone as he continues his recuperation; a January comeback is the earliest that is anticipated.
