Give him a chance: Pundit wants to see phenomenal 18yr old start for Tottenham now
Despite winning four of their previous five games, Tottenham’s situation is still far from ideal.
In fact, despite their current success, Spurs are still experiencing a defensive dilemma.
Due to injuries to Micky Van de Ven, Eric Dier, and Cristian Romero, Spurs are now forced to use a makeshift backline that consists of two full-backs, Ben Davies and Emerson Royal, who play center-half.
Although Spurs don’t currently have any available senior center backs who are fit, they do have some young players who can fill the position. Clinton Morrison said on Sky Sports (31/12/23, 1:25 PM) that Spurs should give Ashley Phillips an opportunity to establish herself in the center of the defense.
Phillips ought to go first
Regarding the “phenomenal” defender, Morrison gave his assessment.
“Why not provide the children a chance? Why not give the young man Phillips, who came in from Blackburn, a chance? Put him up against Ben Davies. I know this is a huge game,” Morrison said.
Best Opportunity
With a side like Tottenham, it’s always dangerous to insert a new player into the mix, but this is the greatest opportunity Spurs will have to give a youngster like Phillips a chance without a lot of pressure.
It’s at moments like these when young players start to establish themselves, and Tottenham currently lacks defensive options.
Spurs may want to make changes at the defense in an effort to attempt to maintain a few more clean sheets after giving up six goals in their previous three games. We’ve seen pressure produce diamonds in the past on several occasions when inexperienced players have been pushed in at the deep end.
In the next weeks, Phillips could have a chance to play against the Spurs.
