Luka Vuskovic is already demonstrating why he is perfect Tottenham defender

In September, Tottenham made a major acquisition of highly-regarded Croatian youth player Luka Vuskovic as they prepared for the future in north London.

Spurs have signed highly-rated Luka Vuskovic from Hajduk Split; he will come in 2025. Tottenham’s signing of Vuskovic in September clearly indicated the team’s long-term plans. After advancing through the ranks to make his professional debut for the Croatian team in February, the 16-year-old signed a deal at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium that would keep him there until 2030.

Vuskovic, who was signed for £12 million from Hajduk, is regarded as one of the most skilled players of his age and has been heralded as Croatian football’s future, so the move might prove to be quite the coup. Vuskovic, who is 6 feet 4 inches tall, will have to wait until he is 18 years old in 2025 to go to England according to FIFA regulations.

The defender revealed to Hajduk Split’s official website that he was aware of interest from some of the top teams in Europe before signing a contract to come to the capital once his transfer to Tottenham was confirmed.

“First of all, I want to thank Hajduk for making this possible for me, the coaches who contributed to my development, the people from the academy, all the employees of the club,” he said. “I tried to remain grounded, practice, and be ready for new challenges throughout the last several months, knowing that major international clubs were showing interest in me.

“Seeing that a team like Tottenham has shown such a willingness and expended so much energy to bring in a player of my age is a huge honor. I’m happy of this, and it gives me even more motivation to focus on growing and improving so that I may be as prepared as possible for the day when I play for their first team.”

For the time being, the player’s only options are to strive to improve even more and get as much first-team experience as he can before making the permanent transfer to North London. So what has happened to him since it was announced that he was joining Tottenham? Below, football.london looks.

Unfortunately, the Split-born player has not yet made an appearance in the first team for the 2023–24 season. Despite making 11 appearances for the club and becoming their youngest-ever goalscorer with a goal in their cup quarterfinal against NK Osijek, he made his mark in the Hajduk Split first team last season. However, he has made the matchday roster six times.

His last participation in the matchday festivities was at the start of December for the 3-0 victory at home against HNK Gorica. He remained on the bench for the first two games of the season at home against Dinamo Zagreb and HNK Riejka before returning to the team in early November. Vuskovic hasn’t played much for Mislav Karoglan’s team, but he recently gained some playing time as he competed for his nation in three UEFA Euro Under-19 Championship qualifiers.

The young player participated for the whole ninety minutes in Croatia’s 0-0 draw with Israel as well as their victories against Armenia and the Faroe Islands. Apart from his time on the international scene, Vuskovic has had frequent appearances for Hajduk’s Under-19 squad, which has helped him further in his development.

He has shown that he not only has a great eye for goal, but he is a very excellent defender with a bright future ahead of him. Vuskovic, who scored six goals in 14 games for the Under-19s the previous season, scored two goals in November’s 5-2 victory against HNK Sibenik.

The defense scored goals in the 33rd and 39th minutes of the match to swing the score in their favor after trailing 1-0 after 10 minutes. He set up forward Lovre Loncar in a 2-1 victory away at Rijeka later in the month, earning him an assist.

With his ability to get on the ball, press up from the back, and challenge the goalkeeper in their October loss to NK Mladost, Hajduk Split noted in their match report that the Croat is indeed the perfect center-back that Postecoglou wants in his Tottenham squad. Vuskovic still has some time to improve his game before joining Tottenham at Hotspur Way, so he has some time until he does decide to leave Split for Spurs.

Following a breakthrough 2023, he will definitely be targeting an even larger 2024 along with a few more first-team departures in the next year. With eyes glued on Vuskovic, everyone at Tottenham is preparing for an extraordinarily bright future in N17.
