David Ornstein has changed his mind about Tottenham’s January transfer plans

Regardless of whether Tottenham Hotspur sell Eric Dier or not, David Ornstein has said he is now certain the club will sign a center-back in January.

Spurs’ first objective in January, according to several reports over the last two months, is to sign a center-back (GiveMeSport).

The same seems to be verified on Thursday when Ange Postecoglou acknowledged that the Lilywhites are in dire need of strengthening at center-half since they lack alternatives there (Football.London).

Having spent the majority of the Harry Kane cost in the summer before the striker’s transfer to Bayern Munich, Ornstein himself said last month that Tottenham does not have much money to spend in January (The Athletic).

Fabrizio Romano, who said to Caughtoffside a few weeks ago that Spurs won’t be spending “crazy money” and would instead be searching for possibilities as the window closes, supported this.

Ornstein reconsiders his decision to join the Spurs

Ornstein has now acknowledged that he may have underestimated Tottenham’s “a little more money to spend.”

The writer also disclosed that, despite his initial doubts that Spurs would acquire a defender without selling Dier, he now anticipates the signing of a center-half, regardless of what becomes of the 29-year-old.

“There may be little money to spend, but that doesn’t mean Spurs cannot be creative to strengthen their squad,” the writer said in a Q&A for The Athletic.

“As far as the center back goes, I don’t really think Dier has to go (as I once thought), but we’ll have to wait and see what the club’s revamped recruitment team, working with Postecoglou, Munn, and Levy, can accomplish.”

In Our Views

Dier is clearly not trusted by Postecoglou, so there’s no way that his future would affect Tottenham’s search for a center defender.
