Daniel Levy produces Tottenham masterstroke as 87% ace flying high under Postecoglou

Spurs fans had a hectic summer, with the news of Harry Kane’s departure hogging the front pages.

However, the North London team has managed to get by without its old lucky charm so far, thanks to Ange Postecoglou’s excellent work in the dugout.

Destiny Udogie, a left back, is one of the Tottenham players that the manager has released during his short tenure at the team.

After signing the teenage defender in July 2022, Daniel Levy clearly took a careful approach with him, loaning him back to Udinese for the 2022–2023 season.

Another Serie A season saw the Italian flourish, and Tottenham made a brilliant move in allowing him to do so.

Although Udogie has only played in 14 games for the team, he has already contributed two assists and one goal, ranking him joint fourth for defender goal involvements in 2023–2024 [official Tottenham website, December 14]. Nevertheless, he is really impressing with his overall performances in North London.

Under Postecoglou, the defender has played 17 passes into the box in his inverted full-back position. He has completed 539 passes in 2023–24 with an accuracy of 86.83% [official Tottenham website, 14 December].

In addition, the gifted left-back has produced ten opportunities during open play, underscoring his inverted position once again. Udogie has generated more opportunities with balls from central areas.

When it comes to the average positions of full-back and wing-back touches, only four clubs get on the ball higher up the pitch than Tottenham (54.8m), with their left side (55.3m) averaging higher than the right (53.9m). Tottenham’s aggressive style of play has helped propel the North London team among the top teams in the Premier League.

Now, going back to Udogie, the 21-year-old is fourth on the list of full-backs in the Premier League in terms of progressive carries (1,085.8m) despite having just 175 carries overall.

In the last third, the left-back has also created 12 turnovers, which makes him the only defender in the tournament with at least as many.

Only Son Heung-min (14), Pape Matar Sarr (13), and Dejan Kulusevski (13), his colleagues at Tottenham, have more.

It is anticipated that Udogie will continue to produce such outstanding defensive and offensive performances for many years to come, since he earlier this week signed a new long-term deal with the club that will keep him there until 2030.
