Roberto De Zerbi is being forced to think outside the box heading into the final stretch of the Premier League season, with injuries leaving Tottenham Hotspur short on options.
One of the biggest boosts has come from 18-year-old striker Mason Melia, who has been training with the first team this week. The highly-rated forward joined Spurs from St Patrick’s Athletic in a deal worth £1.6 million, potentially rising with add-ons, and is widely regarded as one of Ireland’s brightest prospects.
After early setbacks due to injury and illness, Melia has started to find his rhythm. He made an instant impact for the U21s, scoring just minutes into his debut, and has since featured regularly. With Xavi Simons sidelined by an ACL injury and Dominic Solanke nursing a hamstring issue, the teenager could soon find himself in a senior matchday squad.
Despite his age, Melia already brings experience, with nearly 100 senior appearances and over 30 goal contributions under his belt.
There’s also positive news on Luca Williams-Barnett, another exciting young attacker. The 17-year-old, who has already made appearances in both domestic and European competitions this season, is nearing a return after a spell out with back problems—a common issue among developing players.
Fellow youngster Jun’ai Byfield is back training on grass but is expected to be eased in carefully, while winger Tynan Thompson has caught the eye with strong performances for the U21s, scoring in consecutive matches and impressing in youth European competition earlier this campaign.
With just four league games remaining, Spurs may be relying on this new generation to step up as De Zerbi navigates a challenging end to the season.
