Tottenham Hotspur starting XI vs Atletico Madrid: Confirmed Team News and predicted lineup

Tonight promises to be a dramatic evening under the bright lights of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The home team is facing a massive mountain to climb against the tough Spanish side, Atletico Madrid. Manager Igor Tudor knows perfectly well that it will be incredibly hard to turn this knockout tie around.

The team is currently trailing by a large margin, but there is still a small bit of hope hanging in the air. Tottenham is trying hard to put together a strong response after a very shaky few weeks.

They need an absolute miracle to stay alive in Europe’s biggest and most famous club competition.

The most important news for the team right now is the return of their star defender, Cristian Romero. He missed the recent Premier League match against Liverpool, and his absence was very easy for everyone to see.

The team missed his loud voice, his brave tackles, and his way of organizing the whole defense. Manager Igor Tudor confirmed that Romero trained well with the group and is fully ready to play. Having him back on the grass changes the entire mood for both the players and the fans.

It brings a lot of needed strength and bravery to a team that has been giving up too many easy chances lately.

While Romero brings great news, the injury list is still very long and painful for the club. Tudor gave some honest updates on a few other key players.

The bright side is that young midfield talent Lucas Bergvall and fast full-back Destiny Udogie are finally returning to the matchday squad.

Bergvall has been out of action for two whole months after having surgery on his injured ankle. Udogie has been missing since early February because of a bad hamstring problem.

Even though they might only sit on the bench tonight, just having them ready to help late in the game is a big plus for the manager.

On the other hand, Conor Gallagher remains a very big question mark for this game. He is currently dealing with a virus and some breathing issues related to asthma.

Tudor explained that he is definitely not ready to start the game, but the medical team will wait and see if he is healthy enough to at least sit on the bench. Sadly, Joao Palhinha is doing worse and is definitely ruled out for this match.

The list of players who cannot play tonight is honestly shocking. Tottenham will have to fight this huge battle without Ben Davies, Mohammed Kudus, Rodrigo Bentancur, Wilson Odobert, Yves Bissouma, James Maddison, and Dejan Kulusevski.

To make matters even worse, their Brazilian attacker Richarlison cannot play because he is serving a suspension.

Missing this much talent makes the job against a smart and tricky team like Atletico Madrid incredibly difficult.

Because of all this, Tudor has a big choice to make about how the team will set up on the field. In the last game against Liverpool, he used four players in the back line.

That helped the team keep the ball better and feel a bit more balanced. However, Tudor usually likes to play with three central defenders. Most people expect him to go back to his favorite three-man defense tonight.

This means Guglielmo Vicario will start in goal. In front of him, the back three will likely be Kevin Danso, the returning Cristian Romero, and the super-fast Micky van de Ven. This wall of defenders will try to keep Madrid quiet while letting the wide players push up the field to attack.

The wide areas of the pitch will be covered by Pedro Porro on the right side and Djed Spence on the left. In the middle of the park, the team will depend heavily on the young legs and high energy of Archie Gray and Pape Matar Sarr.

Since so many regular midfielders are hurt, these two young players will have to run all night to win the ball back. Going forward, the team needs goals very quickly. Xavi Simons will bring his clever passing and quick feet to try and unlock the tough Spanish defense.

Since Richarlison is out, Randal Kolo Muani is expected to step up and play an important attacking role alongside him.

At the very top of the team, Dominic Solanke will be the main striker. His job will be very clear today. He needs to take the pressure created by his teammates and turn it into actual goals.

The big match kicks off at 8:00 PM GMT this Wednesday, March 18, 2026. Fans around the world can watch all the action live on TNT Sports.

Putting this starting eleven on the field is a big risk for Igor Tudor, but he simply has no other choice left. The team has already used up all their chances to make mistakes in this tournament.

Now, they must play a perfect game. Having the right players is important, but doing things perfectly on the grass is what really matters in the end.

We will soon see if this is the sad end of their Champions League dream or the magical start of a historic comeback night.
