Everton open talks with Tottenham over forgotten player as clause close to being triggered
Sean Dyche claims that Everton has contacted Tottenham in an attempt to reach a compromise on Dele Alli’s transfer to Goodison Park. In a convoluted free transfer deal, the midfield player departed North London, with the Toffees having to pay hefty costs once a number of requirements are fulfilled.
The first £10 million is owed to Spurs when Alli makes 20 appearances for Everton. Although the 27-year-old has only made 13 appearances in over two years on Merseyside, the club’s precarious financial status may make them choose not to use him.
Dyche is now free of that conundrum since Alli is still many weeks away from being ready for action. Due to a muscular rupture, the former Milton Keynes Dons youth prospect has been out since March. He spent six weeks in treatment for addiction during that period.
When at his peak, Alli would be a tremendous addition to Everton in their quest to avoid relegation from the Premier League for a second straight year.
Consequently, Dyche said that in an attempt to reach an agreement with Spurs, the Toffees had already started preliminary negotiations. “[Kev Thelwell, the director of football], has had a few somewhat background phone calls asking Tottenham where they can watch it. However, nothing has changed as of yet,” he said.
“It is important to note that while he is exercising, he is still far from being fit. The sports science staff is training him, not us. Just now, he is really returning to his previous state.
“It is almost more time than the initial point when the rehab [went] awry after a procedure, which was a grave misfortune for him. However, the experts said to let it heal spontaneously and to leave it alone. Although he is not far away, he is in a nice place.”
As things stand, assuming Alli fulfils all the requirements of his transfer from Spurs, Everton may have to pay a maximum of £30 million. The Premier League has proposed a 12-point punishment for the club due to their violation of profit and sustainability regulations, given their current financial difficulties.
The penalty might be implemented this season if the independent committee agrees with the Premier League, which would put Everton’s top-flight status in even greater jeopardy.
With ten games completed, Dyche and company have amassed a five-point cushion above the relegation zone. This Saturday, when Brighton visits Goodison Park, they will want to solidify their position even more.
