This season, Sanchez has started five games, scored one goal, completed 84% of his passes, made 2.2 interceptions, 1.8 tackles, 2.8 clearances, and an incredible 9.4 ball recoveries per game, according to Sofascore.
The 6 foot 2 behemoth put on an incredible performance to seal an unexpected victory at the Theatre of Dreams against Manchester United in the Champions League. He earned two assists, made two crucial passes, and demonstrated his defensive prowess by forcing six clearances.
Sanchez more than quadrupled his total assists as a Tottenham player from that one game alone, and he now has more assists for the season than Pedro Porro, the right-back for Spurs, who writer Alasdair Gold has called “one of the best passers” at the team.
Earned one assist, placing him in the top 17% for assists per 90 and the top 11% for shot-creating actions throughout the course of the previous season among full-backs in the top five leagues in Europe.
By contrast, FBref shows that Sanchez, who is 27 years old, is among the top 1% of centre defenders in Europe’s top five leagues over the last year in terms of assists made per ninety. This illustrates how effective his creative play is.
Porro, of course, is hardly deceptive this season and appears to be a true offensive force on the right flank, but Sanchez’s revived attacking creativity has been essential to the Istanbul giants’ success in games like the one at Old Trafford.
